David Zook Obituary

David James Zook

August 8, 1948 - June 19, 2025

Milton, Washington - David Zook, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2025, in Milton, Washington, due to complications from Parkinson's Disease.

Born in Tacoma, Washington, David was the eldest of six children of Goldine and Jim Zook. From a young age, he embraced responsibility, helping care for his siblings while pursuing his passion for music, friendship, and tinkering in the garage with his dad. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1966 and attended Washington State University, studying architecture and engineering. A gifted vocalist and clarinetist, David also performed with the university's band and choirs.

During his sophomore year, David was severely injured in a house fire, enduring life-threatening burns. Through resilience, deep faith, and strong family support, he recovered and completed his education at Bates Technical Institute in 1972. He worked for years as a draftsman and chemical engineer at Penwalt Corporation, later co-owning a technology company, and eventually working at Washington Floral until retirement.

In 1976, David married Earlene Ferguson, the love of his life. Together they raised two sons, Douglas and Matthew, creating a supportive and joy filled home. A lifelong Mariners and Seahawks fan, David was known for his warmth, humor, and devotion to family.

David served for decades at Lincoln Park Christian Church as a song leader, choir director, teacher, and elder. He had a gift for connecting with children and left a lasting impact on all who knew him.

David is survived by his wife of 49 years, Earlene; sons Douglas (Amy) Amundson and Matthew (Anneliese) Zook; grandson Ethan Amundson; father James (Jeannie) Zook; siblings Cherie (Scott) Caulley, Denyce (Rick) Holt, Michael (Diana), Earl (Liz), and Troy (Linda) Zook; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A celebration of David's life will be held Saturday, August 2nd at 2 p.m. at Summit Christian Fellowship, 3714 84 St E, Tacoma, WA 98446.

Dave and I worked at Pennwalt in the same engineering department. He was always fun to work with. I´m so sorry he is gone. Great guy!

I took care of David in the recovery room after his first burn surgery, as a student nurse. It makes my heart full to know he went on to live a full, loving life.
