Freddy, I couldn't believe it when I found out you passed away... I hadn't gone to Retired Police Officer meeting for several years. You were always there taking pictures.

I thought maybe you had moved south for warmer weather like so retired people do... after attending a retired meeting last year, I went home and checked the TNT Obit online and sadly I found you there.

The other day I was going through my storage locker and came across the info on the Chiefton Rest. Robbery... We had corned the suspects and captured them.

My brother is Jack McFarlane. I met Fred when I was 17. He was home on leave at the time and visiting my brother. He had a great sense of humor and I know it hit my brother really hard because he had known Fred from second grade. He and his family are in our prayers. God bless all of you.

Fred was a once in a lifetime friend. Through all the years he was one person I could always count on to be there for me. "But that's what family is for." I always felt safe knowing Fred was keeping an eye out here on the hill, as I'm sure he still is. Your at peace now, until we meet again my friend.

Mary and Mike, Your always on my mind and forever in my heart, I love you and will always be here for you.

Fred was my friend and neighbor since 1971. Both Fred and Mary were like a second set of parents to myself and my brother Phil. I remember vividly going over to their house and their "park like" yard and rustic home.

A few days before Fred chose to leave this world something told me I needed to go see him. The feeling was so strong that I kept writing his name on my hand at work that day. During our visit we talked just a little while and I shared some of my life events which were similar to his. Fred asked me questions...I answered them honestly...and he cried. Fred asked me if I believed in God and I said 200% which made him VERY happy.

He became quiet and very politely said he needed to be alone. I asked if he would be ok...he said he would. Before I left I asked if I could have a hug. Fred jumped up from that couch and gave me the biggest hug ever!

About an hour after I left my dad and I heard Fred tinkering in his yard. It was a very happy and familiar sound for us to hear.

Fred I'm sorry you needed to leave us so soon... You will be missed.

I met Fred during my rookie year with TPD, and will always remember him as the "ultimate undercover" officer. He was a friend to everyone, and a mentor to many. He addressed me as "DC" from the time we met 30 years ago, to the last time I saw him at the retired officers assoc. meeting last year. I will miss Fred very much.

Mary and Mike,
I had the pleasure of working with your father in the Special Assaults Unit in the 1990's. We became friends and kept in contact after he retired and after I later retired. Fred was one of the nicest people I had the pleasure of knowing. I will miss the conversations and occasional Alaskan salmon. He loved you.

I shadowed Fred my first day on the job after my promotion to detective in 1997, Fred gave me a tour of the city and bought me lunch. He spoke of how in retirement he would fish in Alaska till his heart's content. Fred was one of the nicest people I met during my time TPD. Time counts and keeps counting.

Fred was our neighbor. He was so wonderful, friendly and caring! He always would leave a bag of tomatoes or some other treasure on our fence. A truly kind person. We have missed talking to him by the fence! Our thoughts are with his family. What a dear man the world has lost.

Indeed Fred, you were a very loyal man and a good soul. I will forever remember our times we had in SAU, our laughter, and our trying to understand things for which there seemed no acceptable answers. My heart to yours. I will miss you deeply and wish I could have lifted you up more often than I did.
