Gary Snyder Obituary

Gary Edwin Snyder

September 4, 1939 - May 12, 2025

Edgewood, Washington - Gary Edwin Snyder, 85, beloved husband, father, veteran, and friend, was born on September 4, 1939, to John W. and A. Mildred (Schirmer) Snyder in Jennings Lodge, Oregon. On May 12, 2025, Gary passed peacefully in the arms of his family at the home he had cherished since 1961 in Edgewood, Washington.

Gary attended school in Puyallup and graduated from Puyallup High School in 1957. He began his college education at the University of Puget Sound, where he joined the Theta Chi fraternity and played in the jazz band. He later graduated from Pacific Lutheran University.

Gary proudly served in the United States Marine Corps as a naval aviator, flying over 200 missions in Vietnam in A-4 Skyhawks while serving as a squadron intelligence officer. Following his military service, he continued his love of flying with Pan Am, where he explored the world and volunteered for both the evacuation of Saigon and troop transport missions during Operation Desert Storm. He later founded Capital Material Handling, where he specialized in building overhead bridge cranes, and was an active member of Rotary 8.

A man of many passions, Gary was a pilot, race car driver, and sailor. He enjoyed cruising and racing his sailboat, Native Son, and was a proud member of the Tacoma Yacht Club for over 50 years. In his later years, he found joy tending his tree farm, participating in the Washington Farm Forestry Association (WFFA), playing chess, bridge and spending time with his family.

Gary is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jo Ann (Stearns) Snyder; his son, Dr. Gary Snyder Jr. (Nancy); his daughter, Elizabeth Lindenmuth (Dave); and his grandchildren, Natasha, Bryce, Brooke, and Crew. He is also grateful for longtime friends Rusty, Carl, Mark, and George.

He will be remembered for his service, charm, stories, trademark tardiness, and the quiet moments of wisdom he shared with those lucky enough to know him.

The family extends special thanks to his wonderful care team at the VA: Rebecca, Valorie, and Eleanor.

Fair winds and following seas, Dad. Semper Fi.
