Harold Best Obituary

Harold Goodwin Best July 2, 1915 - December 27, 2005 Harold passed away peacefully at age 90, while in the care of his loving wife of 60 years, Lois V. Best. He was a very caring person and was loved and respected by all who knew him. Harold was born July 2, 1915 in Redhouse, NY to Mertie and Horace Best. Harold was the seventh of nine children who each preceded him in death. Harold graduated from Sunnydale H.S. in Burien, WA in 1932. He then attended Seattle Pacific College (University) where he was awarded a three year scholarship by singing in a male quartet. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education and a Master's Degree from the University of Washington. Harold married Lois V. Watson on April 6, 1945 while serving in the U.S. Navy in WWII. After the military, Harold began his life long service in public education. He began his career as a vocal music teacher in the Renton School District and finished working the last eighteen years of his career as the superintendent of the Peninsula School District. Harold had a passion for music. He is the former director of the Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church choir, he sang and directed barber shop quartets, wrote and arranged music, and taught music to thousands of students throughout his career. Harold devoted his life to Christ. He was most recently a member of Harbor Covenant Church in Gig Harbor. Harold was also a long standing member of many civic organizations including the Lion's Club where he was a member for 45 years. During his association with the Lion's, Harold was awarded the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellow award and he also served a term as president and zone chairman. During retirement Harold had a passion for traveling. He and Lois traveled throughout the world numerous times, and often traveled with family and close friends. Harold is survived by his wife, Lois V. Best, son, Jerry Best of Brussels, Belgium, 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Harold's daughter, Judith Ennes, preceded him in death. A public viewing for Harold will be held on January 3rd from 4PM to 7PM at Haven of Rest Funeral Home and Memorial Park off of Highway 16 in Gig Harbor. There will be a private graveside service for family members. A public memorial servie will be held at Harobr Covenant Church at 5601 Gustafson Drive Northwest in Gig Harbor on Wednesday, January 4, 2006 at 1:30 pm.

Harold and Lois have known of me nearly my entire life, and I was fortunate to have met them both within the past five. I'm sure Harold and my sister Judi are having a good talk right now.
