I am shocked and saddened to hear that Jim passed. We were friends as children and allthough we lost touch over the years when we would bump into one another it was allways smiles and easy conversation, and when I last saw him a few months back it was no different. You will be missed Jim.... God bless

I'm gonna miss BS'ing with James about the Steelers whenever I ran into him during football season.

James was truly a class act and such an easy person to talk to and get along with. Gone too soon. My thoughts are with his wife and family.

James, you'll be missed by many.

I am having a hard time digesting this.. Jim was a huge part of my teen years, like a brother to me. I'm at a lose for words.
I will pray for his family. I hope everyone will make a donation to U.S Bank for his family. God Bless The Kasalek Family

I first became friends with James (or “Jimmy” as I knew him) in 1978. We were both 8 years old. The original Superman movie, with the late Christopher Reeve, was playing at the Tacoma Mall Twin and I desperately wanted to go. Unfortunately, no one in my family shared my passion, so I was encouraged to invite a Fawcett Elementary School classmate. That Jimmy’s a cool guy, I thought, so I asked him and he accepted. Long story short, we had a ball and became “best” friends for the next couple of years.

In the process, Jimmy’s mother, Mickie, took us to many Tacoma Yankees/Tugs games, where we sat in the front row, arrived early, and collected scads of incredibly cool autographs. We also played tons of backyard sports, wrestled, drank soda pop, and laughed our heads off the way only 8 year old boys do.

At some point, Jimmy and I got into a schoolyard fistfight, the only time I’ve ever fought in my life. Unsurprisingly, it was over something stupid—a recess spat borne out of an intense ball game. I think we both felt pretty horrible afterwards—and pretty silly too. In fact, by the time our late great teacher, Mrs. McCormick, made us talk through our differences and shake hands, we were both laughing.

I saw the grown up version of Jimmy several months ago at a Fawcett Elementary School reunion. He remembered our adventures with Superman and Cheney Stadium, but it struck me that he barely remembered our fight. We should all be so enlightened, I thought, to remember the best in ourselves and each other, and leave the other nonsense behind.

So in the wake of Jimmy’s unexpected passing, I will pay homage to him by celebrating the powerful lesson he taught me without necessarily knowing or intending to—and remember the good times, the “real” times—along with the beautiful wife and children whose lives he graced so profoundly. Please rest in peace, my old friend Jimmy.

I knew Jim my whole life. I did not speak to him on a daily basis but consider him a close friend; when I last spoke to him we were laughing and having a great time and this is how I choose to remember him. My family and I offer our deepest sympathies to his wife, sons and family.
