To the Hickman Family - I was thinking about Jason this afternoon. What a wonderful family man, a great leader, a selfless servant. I remain inspired by his positive attitude and his sterling values. Best to you Tiffany, and those three young men now who certainly continue to cary Jason's values and sense of honor. I am a better person for having served with him.

I met Jason on a mission/patrol in Afghanistan that was like most I'm sure, full of certain risk. After being out all night and the following day we came to a wadi, and were in secure perimeter mode.
Jason and I sat, he offered me water, and he talked about his wife and sons. An emotional oasis in war. He produced the pictures of his wife and individual pictures of his three sons. I commented how much all three looked like him. He was so proud of his family.
I think of him often. Such a good man. I pray his sons understand how great the love was he had for them. He did what he loved, protecting us.

To the family of SFC Jason Hickman, I am sorry for your loss. Our family will always be grateful for Jason in service and ultimate sacrifice for his country and family. I hope his boys will someday be able to see this sight and how much he was cared about and appreciated.

My name is Major Matthew Uber. I was the nurse anesthetist who took care of Jason at FOB Salerno in 2010. I am a Christian and I prayed for Jason before he came to my trauma table. I prayed for him and his family after we knew he was already gone and there was nothing we could do. I will never forget him and how peaceful he looked at that moment. I continue to lift up his family in prayer. He affected all of us profoundly that day and his testimony continued even in death. May God bless and comfort you

I was able to visit Jason's grave site today. I heard his name announced during the Memorial Day Ceremony and went to look him up in the directory. In 2010 I was at Dand Wa Patan, a few bases away from his, but within the same brigade operating area.

Dear family of Sgt. 1st Class Jason Hickman, I am so sorry for the loss of your hero. He was a hero in many ways to many people. He was helping to maintain our freedoms and helping to bring freedoms to those that have never known freedom before. I send many packages to contacts listed at AnySoldier.com. Your Jason, being a volunteer contact for Any Soldier.com, was an angel to many in the field. He cared enough for his unit to help pass out mail to those who maybe did not receive any or as much mail as others. Helping them to know that they were supported, cared for and prayed for by us at home in the USA. What a true hero. Freedom isn’t free.
Thank you Sgt. 1st Class Jason Hickman. We miss you greatly!
May God’s Holy Spirit grant your family comfort as they progress through grieving for the loss of their very special hero.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

"O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved,
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine,
Till all success be nobleness,
And every gain divine."

Our thoughts are with Jason's family, friends, and to those who served with him as they strive to deal with this tragic loss.

Jason Hickman has joined the hallowed company of those noble men and women, heroes all, who have fallen before him in service of their country, and their fellow Americans.

He will not be forgotten. They will not be forgotten.

Tiffany, Hayden, Landon, and Clayton--I know you have laid a very dear sacrifice at the foot of freedom, and I thank you. I know that Jason is very proud of you all, and you are very proud of him. He stayed the course to defend his freedom, his family's freedom, and his country. Again, I thank you.

I know there are no words to say at this time, except how sorry that I am. I truly feel your loss and pain. My thoughts and prayers are with you always. Jason will never be forgotten.

For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

For those missing in action;
for those who didn’t make it home.
I know you’re in God’s presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.

I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

I salute you .

I am a friend of Chad Franklin, Jason's stepbrother. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Chad and all the Hickman family in their immense loss. But even in their terrible grief, I know that they are all so proud of Jason's service. He made the ultimate soldier's sacrifice by laying down his life for his country, as so many have done before and will do afterward. May we always honor their memory.

I corresponded with Jay over the last year when I started sending care packages to his unit through anysoldier.com. He was the liaison & sent messages to everyone when he could. When I heard about his death, I felt like I'd lost a friend, even though we'd never met...
He always spoke of his love of his wife & the boys in every e-mail. I can't even begin to comprehend your loss.
I thought I'd share a few words from an e-mail he sent to me back in April of last year...
"One thing I tell people is that no one prays for peace for than the American Soldier. We decide to serve our country whenever it needs us, to do whatever it asks of us, without question. Sometimes we may not agree with what we are told, but we do it anyway knowing that there is some higher reasoning behind it. Sometimes the guys don't see the BIG picture of what we do, the little things we accomplish everyday goes along way to the stability in this part of the world...
We are just trying to get through it one day at a time, and look forward to coming home to be with our families."
Rest in peace & God Bless you & your family, Jay. It's been an honor knowing you.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to our Brother-in-Arms Sgt1c Jason Hickman. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Jason. And to Jason it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Jason, you are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,353 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Jason’s family and loved ones.
