Joel Cosney Obituary

In Memory of Captain Joel K. Cosney A loving farewell to a bright light who was born in Lancaster, California on July 22, 1959. Joel departed to follow a brighter light on February 18, 2006 in Gig Harbor, Washington. Those of us touched by his light, and there are many, include his much loved and loving wife, Patricia, his parents Elaine Cosney and Joseph Cosney; his sister Samantha Cosney and nephew Kevin; children Jackie McCord, granddaughter Raimie McCord, Tim and Nancy Retynski, his family and friends, his Crowley family, and every person whose life he passed through - an immeasurable number. Joel knew himself well enough to begin living his dream at U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY, graduating in 1981, and spent the next 25 years in an office with a 360 degree ocean view. We will all celebrate his life and light at 1:00 pm on Sunday, February 26, 2006, at the Bell Harbor Convention Center on Pier 66 in Seattle, Washington.

My Dearest Patricia, Tim & Nancy

I wish to let you know you are in my prayers and thoughts through these tough days ahead. I know that you will be fine, and that the love you and Joel shared will bring you through this. I'm sorry you are having to experience this heartache of life, but knowing you had a great love in your life will make those moments alone more precious to reflect on. I am very sorry for your loss. I was a plebe in 4th company (USMMA '81) with Joel and what I remember of him was that he was a great person, well liked and determined. The news of his passing was a shock. My thoughts and prayers are with him.

To Joel's family - Joel and I were plebes together at Kings Point in 4th company in 1977-1978. We had to do a fair amount of pretty, well, unusual things as part of our routine and Joel always had a funny, positive spin on what were doing... he always kept things light. Just a great guy to have on your team. I saw him on his sailboat at Tacoma Tall Ships in July. I was volunteering as Chief on the Virginia V in the parade and he came alongside in his sailboat. He called up looking for me, and we gossiped across the rail and it was a gorgeous, sunny sky with thousands of boats on the water for the parade and Joel was laughing, happy, tan, telling stories - it was just great to see him and catch-up.
