Kathy Diane Lumsden
1958 - 2020
Kathy (Sparling) Lumsden & Sharon (Nichol) Sparling
March 28, 2021 - November 18, 2020
Olalla, Washington - Kathy Diane (Sparling) Lumsden was called to her Heavenly home suddenly, yet peacefully, on March 28th, 2021.
She was born March 17th, 1958 to her loving parents, Robert & Sharon Sparling, in Tacoma, Washington. She grew up in Tacoma, after the family spent a short time in Oregon while her father attended engineering school. She graduated from Wilson High School in 1976, then went on to graduate from nursing school at Highline Community College.
She began working as a Registered Nurse at Tacoma General Hospital and flourished in her role as a caretaker for those in need. She enjoyed working the night-shift, because she loved being able to focus on bringing comfort, healing rest, and a good night's sleep to her patients. Her favorite night-shift "lunch" was milk duds and chocolate milk.
Kathy eventually transitioned to working as a home health nurse, where she gave loving and compassionate care to those who were homebound with their illness. She had a gift of bringing comfort and hope to those who needed it most, and she touched many, many lives through her dedicated career as a nurse.
Kathy met the love her life, Terry Lumsden, in 1981. They were inseparable, and married on August 28th, 1982. Terry & Kathy lived their entire marriage in the dream home that they built together, on a beautiful beach in Olalla with their children Sean, Jennifer, and Thomas. Kathy's family was the center of her whole world.
Kathy loved traveling the world with her husband; going on vacations with her family (especially to visit her extended family in Montana); cheering on the UW Husky football team with Terry at both home and away games; going to Tacoma Rainiers baseball games on sunny afternoons; planting and nurturing beautiful flowers all around her home; and supporting her son Tommy in Special Olympics.
On top of defeating cancer two times, Kathy fought a majority of her adult life against Myotonic Dystrophy, a crippling disease that was slowly taking her physical abilities. Despite the challenges she continually faced, she was determined to live her life as fully as she could with a smile on her face and without a complaint. She was an inspiration to us all and we will miss her beautiful smile, easy laugh, and encouraging words for the rest of our lives. We cannot wait to see her again.
Kathy had many loved ones waiting for her with her Savior Jesus in Heaven: her grandparents (Henrie & Marvel Nichol and Warren & Adeline Sparling); her sister Jill Scherrer; and most recently her beloved mother Sharon Sparling, whom she was very close to and was so devastated by her recent passing. We know it was a very joyous reunion for them all!
Kathy is survived by, and will be deeply missed by many loved ones: her devoted husband Terry; her father Robert Sparling; her brother Bruce Sparling (Cindy); her brothers-in-law Tom Lumsden (Jan), Randy Lumsden (Marsha), and Denny Lumsden (Deb), and Joe Scherrer; her many beloved nieces and nephews; her children Sean Lumsden, Jenny Looney (Blake), and Tom Lumsden; and her grandsons Zach, Alex, Cooper, Nick, and Brock.
"Do not stand
By my grave, and weep.
I am not there,
I do not sleep—
I am the thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints in snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle, autumn rain.
As you awake with morning's hush,
I am the swift, up-flinging rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight,
I am the day transcending night.
Do not stand
By my grave, and weep—
I am not there,
I do not sleep."
