KENNETH FREEMAN Obituary

MSG Kenneth Scott Freeman II Died tragically on Tuesday, January 11, 2011, in his Tacoma home. He was 44 years old. Ken was born in Germany, April 22, 1966, the son of Lt. Col. Kenneth S. Freeman and Inez Thompson Freeman. As a youth in a military family, Ken lived in several states and in Germany. He was graduated from Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1985. Ken worked in a variety of jobs but always returned to his military background, accumulating twenty years in the National Guard and in the U.S. Army Reserves. He served two tours in Iraq, in Tal Afar and in Tikrit. Ken was recognized numerous times during his Army career with awards, to include being named Soldier of the Year. In 2010, he worked in Kuwait for CSA as a contractor. Ken was predeceased by grandparents Walter E. and Vivian A. Freeman of Tacoma; Dave and Ann Thompson of Goldendale, WA; and two uncles, Stephen C. Freeman and Harvey E. Thompson, MD. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 3 1/2 years, Donna Kentley; his father Ken and stepmother Katie Freeman, his mother Inez Freeman, one sister Kristin Freeman, and two nieces Emma and Grace Pitts. Throughout his life, Ken maintained great affection for the Pacific Northwest; he summited Mt Rainier eleven times and climbed all the Cascade peaks. His family and friends prize his loyalty, his sense of fun, caring spirit, his several enthusiasms (fast German cars, German Shepherds and billiards), and his generous nature. He will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be Thursday, January 20, 1:00 pm, at University Place Presbyterian Church. 8101 27th St., W., University Place, WA. Donations may be made to the Best Friends Animal Society, in Ken's name, ( www.bestfriends.org ) to honor Ken's love of animals.

The many posts that I have read have helped me realize what I already knew, how many people loved and admired my brother. I Miss him so much and it makes me smile when I read what others remember about his smile, his open and engaging personality and ...his kind and generous heart and too many other attributes to mention. To all of you who remember him: as a friend, soldier,colleague, classmate or as a fellow traveler on the journey of life...I say "Thank You" for sharing your thoughts about my Kenneth (Ken). In my heart he will always be my sweet baby brother. My parents Ken, Inez and Katie, my children (Emma and Grace) and I thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers. Keep Kenneth in your heart.

I love you my cousin and dear friend! You were there for me and encouraged me through sooo much ALWAYS... One of the kindest and caring persons I knew and especially Michaela who adored you and would never leave you alone until you "hung out with her for awhile". You are loved forever and missed greatly. To Kristen, Emma, Grace and Donna...prayers and love also. Heather xoxox

Ken was in our lives for such a short time, but left an impact that will last for a very long time. We always enjoyed our visits, whether they were at our house, or with him and Donna. The kids remember him as "The Tickle Monster". He had an amazing presence with kids as well as with everyone else he came in contact with. He will be sorely missed. Our thoughts & prayers go out to Donna and the whole Freeman family. Love, Deb, Rick, Ryan & Sarah.

MSG Kenneth Freeman was in the process of rejoining the 448th after a contractor stint in the Middle East when he passed. I am reminded of the closing line from King Lear: “These hard times we must obey - say what we feel - not what we ought to say.”

He was a consummate soldier, a bit hardnosed, and very passionate about what he did and believed in. His loss is also a hard loss for the 448th and all who knew him. He was a friend - we sparred sometimes, argued even more - but never broke that friendship. Most of all I respected and admired his dedication and abilities.

My hope for healing and comfort go to his family, friends, fellow soldiers and all those who knew this complex yet dedicated man.

One of my last memories of Kenneth is of us having lunch in a mess facility in Mosul, Iraq. We were just talking about everyday things, family, friends, work, etc. Just shows how the littlest conversations with someone can become so meaningful. It was an honor serving with him and I am very proud to say that Kenneth Freeman was my friend.

I knew Ken as the Uncle of Grace. He came to our classroom to talk to the students on Veteran's Day and immediately the whole class was engaged and captivated by his character. I can only imagine the positive impact he had on those who spent more time with him. The world is a better place because of his kind heart. Grace, our school community will be here to support you as and your family work through this difficult time. You are in our thoughts!

To the family of Mr. Freeman. There are many people who pass through life, so many deeply touch the lives of others around them. For Ken i would like to keep the light of his life shining by lighting a candle in honor of him as God gives him rest from his labors. May the Lord bless you all till He comes again.

Donna and Family,

No one can know just what you've lost;
No one can understand the cost;
But when you feel your energy drain,
Please count on us to help ease your pain.

Let us help you cope with grief;
We hope with time you'll feel relief.
We can't replace the one who's gone,
But let our concern help you carry on.

My heart reaches out to you.

To Ken, Katie and Ken's Family,

Those piercing blue eyes, the guy that used to say (so excitedly) “wait, wait, but, but, OK, Susan, just let me finish”. Ken brought smiles to so many faces but he has now left a huge hole in our hearts. I hope Ken has found the peace he so deserves.

Ken & Katie – That 'boy' always had the utmost respect for you two.

Donna – You brought him happiness that I had not seen in him before…

With love,

Ken and Katie - I am in shock about Kenneth. No one who was as kind, as giving, and as wonderful as he was should be gone. My last encounter with Kenneth was at Metropolitan Market in the Proctor District. He came up to me, with big hugs as usual, and it seemed lke we had just seen each other the day before. I will really miss him. I am here for you - all you need to do is call. Whatever I can do.......I love you both so much and I am so, so sorry.

I am saddened to hear of Ken's passing. I knew Ken from Frank Russell Company and after we both left there I would run into him at our neighborhood Starbucks on occasion. Ken was always the friendliest person, always had a smile and a kind word. I am so sorry. I wish you all moments of peace in the coming days and weeks of grief and sadness
