LOUISE MARKLAND

Louise Elizabeth Markland "Aunt Louise" April 26, 1924 - July 24, 2014 Aunt Louise left to be reunited with her family Thursday night, three months into her 90th year, preceded by her mother, father, and two brothers, Mark ("Bud") and Gene. She will also be seeing her beloved three dogs, Carmel, Electra, and DJ. Louise was a rare person, beloved by everyone she encountered. Despite having life- long near-sightedness Louise was a voracious reader and poetry lover. Her mother got her a five-year diary when she was ten years old and she made a diary entry every day since. An avid letter writer, she corresponded with friends and family, and wrote to local school children through the local chapter of Telephone Pioneers of America, a volunteer organization that she loved. Louise's aunt got her a job as an operator at Pacific Northwest Bell in 1942, where she continued to work for the next 39 years. At a time when a telephone operator was necessary to place long-distance calls, she also gave customers the exact time, and saved several lives. Her skill as an operator and her intelligence borne of reading made her a compassionate and entirely trustworthy confidante, a trait she enjoyed and prized. She loved her Fircrest home and community, but she also loved the Proctor District where she grew up. She attended Washington Elementary, Mason Junior High, and Stadium High. Louise leaves behind many, many good friends and relatives, her beloved in-laws Larry and Teresa Smith and Delia Markland, and her nephew Sean Markland, who will all miss her terribly. A celebration of the life of Aunt Louise will be held at Joeseppi's Italian Ristorante, 2207 N. Pearl St., 1:00 PM on Saturday, August 2.
