Malcolm Stewart Obituary

Malcolm Harold "Hal" Stewart passed away at his home in Olympia, Washington, on September 7, 2025, following a brief battle with cancer. He was 70 years old.

Born on February 8, 1955, Hal grew up in Tacoma and graduated from Lincoln High School. He went on to serve his country with distinction in the U.S. Air Force for four years. After his military service, Hal dedicated 36 years to the Pierce County Sheriff Corrections Department, where he built lasting bonds with his fellow officers-relationships he considered family. He was also actively involved in the Washington State Jail Association (WSJA).

Hal had a lifelong passion for motorcycles and was a proud member of the Tacoma Trail Cruisers for over four decades. During his time with the club, he held nearly every board position and remained deeply engaged in its community and activities. He enjoyed sharing stories about Tacoma's past and witnessing the city's transformation over the years.

Hal is deeply missed by his son, Hal Stewart of Tacoma; life partner, Joyce McCoy of Olympia; grandsons, Hal R. Stewart and Canyon Stewart of Tacoma; Katie McCoy and Kerrie Gillum; sisters Sandra Novack (husband Al) and Sue Clawson; nieces Mairi Funk and Leigh Novack; and nephew Anthony Novack.

Hal's dedication to his family, friends, and community left a lasting impression on those who knew him. His memory will continue to bring comfort and inspiration. Celebration of Life will be in near future.

Hal was my "buddy", my "Big Brother" I never had! When I started working with him as a naive country boy in 1984, he was one of the first few co-workers who either saw "something" in me, or felt sorry for me! He gave me advice when I needed it, & when I didn't. I didn't always agree with him, we often had disagreements, but we always chalked it up to the "stubbornness" of our shared Scottish heritage! He was my friend & mentor, even when he became Sgt. & Lt. One of my favorite memories with him was in October 1989. We were to join a group of other co-workers down in Florence, OR for a short weekend of of 3 wheel ATV riding. We got off work from dayshift at 3pm on a Friday, he volunteered to drive his yellow Ford truck. Before we even got out of Tacoma, his truck died! He got outside, popped the hood, & grabbed a heavy duty 4D battery flashlight. When nothing else worked to get it started, he started smacking the engine with the flashlight like Arthur Fonzarelli did with the record player on the old TV show "Happy Days". Unbelievably, the engine kicked over, & we never had a problem during trip! Although I would break my hand that weekend riding, I will never forget how the road trip started! I love you buddy, praying for the family's comfort....he was a GREAT guy, & I'm so blessed & grateful he came into my life! :-)
