Marc Olson Obituary

Marc Alan Olson Sept. 15, 1965 - Sept. 21, 2007 Born in Tacoma, Marc graduated from University of Puget Sound with a degree in Physics in 1987. While there, he and his dear friend Scott Andrews founded Passages, the outdoor orientation program for freshmen. Marc also served on the UPS Board of Trustees. He worked as a software engineer at Microsoft since 1989. Marc lived his life to the fullest with energy and commitment, admired by all who knew him. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and friend who had many passions in life including learning, reading, cooking, flying, photography, hiking, boating, skiing and anything that immersed him in the great outdoors. With his wife and kids, Marc loved nothing more than hosting friends and family at their "little bit of paradise" on Stuart Island, enjoying fine food and wine, fellowship and spectacular sunsets. Marc will be remembered by his many friends for his brilliant mind, generous spirit and insatiable appetite for life. Marc is survived by his parents, Judy and Terry Olson, wife Jean, twin sons Alex and Jake, brother Craig, sister Marce and their families. A memorial service to celebrate Marc's life will be held on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, 1:00 pm at University Presbyterian Church, 4540 15th Ave NE, Seattle. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to a college fund that will be established for Alex and Jake.

Jean,
i just heard about Marc's passing and wanted to send you my regrets. We had been in contact a lot lately over the dock and he was so happy to have made progress on that.

Having been a neighbor and friend to the olson family for many years. Growing up enjoying rasberries out of Terrys beautiful garden. Taking daily walks with Judy brought many words of inspiration those words so often come to mind even now 10 years later. Hearing of you loss truly brings great sadness our thoughts and prayers are with you.

To Jean, Jake, and Alex,
We, like others, heard of your loss from many miles away but please know that our hearts and thoughts are with you. We will think of Marc whenever we look at the amazing action pictures he took of the kids playing soccer. We all put our cameras away when Marc was around knowing we'd get some great photos from him. We think of you all everyday. Peace.

Marc,

I am sorry we never got together this summer, nor on your Napa trip.
I enjoyed our correspondances and wish a friendship was given a chance to develop more.

I pray for you and your family

I remember, Marc. Your joi de vivre. Your enthusiasm for fine food and wine. Your 3000 (at the time) bottle collection of wine. Your energy and passion in everything you did. Our customer visit to Madrid. Dear, dear Marc - you touched so many people in your life, and like me, I hope they were all a little inspired.

Marc was my first boss, back in the early 90s, when I was fresh out of school. At the time, I didn't even know how great he was. As the years back, I found myself looking back again and again at my interactions with him.

He was always energetic, and in the past few years, I'd had dinner with him when he came to Boston to visit Groove. I really enjoyed spending time with him, and looked forward to his visit.

The world is a dimmer place without him.

Goodbye Marc.

Marc took on life with a perspective that most people envy. Everything he did was to the utmost especially flying. I flew with Marc at several flyins, with him in his plane and also beside him in my own plane. He will be one pilot and friend I will surely miss. May God give you tailwinds Marc

There are no words to express the feeling of loss at yet another passing of a colleague in the prime of his life. I worked with Marc "back in the day"--in the early 90s at Microsoft--and remember his openess and strength of character. My heart goes out to his family, close friends, and those that worked with him daily. Please know that Marc touched many and we share your loss.

I knew Marc as a parent at our kids’ elementary school and was able to share some experiences where his love of his family was so apparent. His eye with the camera gave us wonderful pictures of our kids’ big moments at school, and I always enjoyed his warm, intelligent conversations. He had a wonderful way of focusing on people. Our thoughts and prayers to Jean, Jake and Alex.

Marc,
Your clear-eyed vision for the university's future, your understanding of the indescribable something that makes Puget Sound a particular place, your insistence that we lend that something a habitation and a name, all this will live in the minds and hearts of all those who pass through Passages, the uniquely Puget Sound experience that every student at UPS has and that you and your colleagues invented for them. Thank you for all of them, and for all of us. And fare forward, traveler.

I knew Marc as the GPM of our team and though our interactions were brief, I found him a great mentor and leader. I was particularly touched by how deeply he tried to connect with people and understand everyone in the team as an individual. I will certainly miss his presence at work.

I only knew Marc vicariously through my husband, but he seemed to be so well-thought of and possessed such a zest for life, that I wish I had known him personally.

My most sincere prayers and best wishes go out to Marc's family.

Marc was a classmate as well as a neighbor; I have many memories of Marc and Jerry sneaking through the woods to my house on summer nights while my sister and I were “camping” in the horse pasture. Marc was a bright shinning star for the Yelm High School Class of 1983. He will be greatly missed. May he Rest in Peace.

We first met Marc when he was a high school student. After graduation he spent a few summers working on Jim's summer painting crew and cruising the San Juan Islands and Canadian waters with us on our boat. We believe Marc's love for Stuart Island came initially from spending time with us there. After college and his marriage to Jean, we stayed in touch for years. We also developed a relationship with Terry and Judy. This sudden loss comes as a shock to our entire family as we thought of him like a son. Marc will be greatly missed but we look forward to seeing him again in eternity!

Marc was a friend and neighbor. I will never forget camping out in our parents fields, hiking through the local woods or riding inner tubes down the Nisqually River. The memories you make growing up last a life time. My memories of growing up living next door to the Marc are happy ones.

Marc's passing leaves a big hole in our Dads and Kids group. His generosity, curiosity, enthusiasm and love of the outdoors (as well as excellent wine cellar) made these shared adventures all the more richer and enjoyable for both the Dads and the kids. Without Marc we would never have experienced things like hikes through Stewart Island, bumpy rides in (and on top of) his various Island vehicles, pods of orcas, and lots of great conversation over a glass of wine. I feel privileged to have had these experiences with Marc and am deeply saddened that there will be no more.

What an inspiration you were in so many different ways, Marc. Your intellect, enthusiasm, great wit, love of flying, fine wines, food... in all our shared pasions, I was very impressed with your abilities and absolutely respected your approach. For a "young guy" you made me look up to you in so many, many ways. And my admiration for you was huge. I'm a better person for having known you, Marc. With great love and respect, I'll cherish your memory.

Marc touched the hearts and minds of so many. Marc, a leader by all definitions, acted with integrity and chose with a keen mind. His smile served as a source of reassurance in times of stress. He will be sorely missed.

When you are out at Hood Canal for Passages, whether on the waterfront or up at the mountaintop, there is an immensely beautiful sky - full of stars in the evening, dazzling with rays of sunshine at dawn. "There is a lonesome place against the sky," wrote Adlai Stevenson - and so it feels today. I will remember Marc's gifts as a joyful, creative, and supportive friend to his Puget Sound compatriots - and I choose to envision him appreciating an immensely beautiful sky.
