Margaret Hemphill Obituary

Mrs. Margaret "Peggy" Hemphill, the loveliest person you could ever meet, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2025, at the age of 94. Peggy lived a full life of service, friendship, faith and dedication to her family.

Born August 27, 1931, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Peggy was the youngest child and cherished only daughter of Victor and Gladys Scollin. Peggy met John Allen Hemphill of Boise, Idaho in 1951, a cadet at West Point Military Academy. They were married the following year after his graduation and commissioning into the U.S. Army.

An incomparable Army wife, Peggy supported John's extraordinary career and impacted lives at each of their numerous assignments. While raising five daughters, she found time to mentor other Army wives and to bring her caring to charitable initiatives. For seven decades, she anchored her family through dozens of stressful periods of John's overseas deployments as well as those of several sons-in-laws and grandchildren.

Settling after retirement in Steilacoom, Washington, Peggy and John continued their lives of service. They supported local charities and businesses, and worked especially hard with the Steilacoom Fireworks Committee. A devout Catholic, Peggy helped to maintain the Immaculate Conception Church in Steilacoom, a tiny historical building, unlocking it herself on many frosty Sundays.

To know her was to love her, and those who had the good fortune of knowing Peggy will attest that such superlatives cannot do justice to her classy, charming self and the positive influence she made on lives around her. Peggy brought a smile to your face with her sparkling laugh and biting wit, made you feel welcome and appreciated with her loving gaze, and motivated you to be a more loving person (with a cleaner house). May her innate goodness continue to inspire us all to live kinder, happier lives.

Peggy is survived by daughters Patricia Hemphill [spouse Loren Dollet] and their children Emily and Matthew; Kathie Intile and her sons John, Timothy, and Patrick; Margaret [spouse Michael] Ferriter and children Meghan, Daniel, Michael Paddy, and Mary Whitney; Eileen [spouse Mark] Hemphill-Haley and son Ethan; and Noreen Hemphill and children Mary Margaret and Joseph, as well as 15 great-grandchildren.

Peggy will be buried with John at West Point, where they first met. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Steilacoom Citizens' Fireworks Committee.
