Martin A. Petrich III
Martin A. Petrich, III
November 27, 2021
Tacoma, Washington - Martin "Mart" Petrich, a 3rd generation Tacoman, died at home at age 78, with his wife and son by his side on November 27, 2021, after a valiant 22 month journey with brain cancer, Glioblastoma. He survived far longer than expected and met its many challenges with determination, acceptance, and humor.
Mart graduated from Bellarmine Prep in Tacoma, WA, earned a BA in History from Santa Clara University, an MBA from University of WA, and a 2nd BA in International Studies from UW Tacoma at age 52.
Mart gave his all to whatever he did, from his Navy days as Officer-in-Charge of a Swiftboat in Vietnam (retiring as a full Commander after 20 years in the reserves) to his years as CEO of MIW Aerospace making parts for Boeing planes. After he retired, Mart contributed time and talents to numerous community efforts, such as Treasurer of Federal Way Rotary, co-creator and advocate for the FW Rotary Foundation, and leadership roles for the Federal Way Day Center, the Community Caregivers Network, Do The Right Thing, and Federal Way Kiwanis.
Mart was loyal, forthright, hardworking and deeply loved his wife Suzy and son Ian. He forged many lifelong friendships, some that started in kindergarten. While he enjoyed hiking, skiing, boating, and lots of travel, he was happiest creating spreadsheets to track finances for his family and organizations he helped, working out at the gym, and creating and maintaining beauty in his garden and home.
He viewed his last months as a gift - an opportunity for wonderful visits and with family and friends - reminiscing, laughing, and sharing their mutual respect and admiration for each other. Mart showed us how to live through his service to country and community, and how to face health challenges with strength and humility. He kept his sense of humor until the end. He was very tired and fairly non-responsive while receiving Last Rites, but after Fr. Fuchs left, Mart regained alertness briefly and asked his son with a small twinkle in his eye, "I thought I was supposed to get red wine too!" He got his wine through a straw shortly thereafter!
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carolyn "Suzy" Petrich, son Ian Petrich, and siblings: Ann Sloper, Catherine Petrich, Joe (and Suzanne) Petrich and George (and Kathleen) Petrich, and a large extended family. He was predeceased by his parents, Martin and Jean Petrich, his son Ben, and his sisters, Susan and Regina Mary.
A celebration of life will be held in Tacoma at a date TBD. The family suggests memorial gifts to any of the charities listed above.

I will miss seeing Mart working in the yard and around the house in Arizona. He enjoyed joining in on any conversation that Suzy and I were having. My sympathies to Suzy, Ian and extended family. Love from your Arizona neighbor Sue.
