Tacoma, Washington - Maxine Marie Strom grew up in the northern part of Indiana, where she was married to Donald A. Strom in 1946. They raised their family in that area until a job transfer required a move to Maryland and then a subsequent move to New Jersey. After Donald's death in 1985 she moved to Tacoma to be closer to her daughter.
Volunteer work was a large part of her life in all three states. This included various offices in her church; volunteer work and board member of an organization providing various services including medical in a distressed area of Paterson, N.J.; and longtime volunteer and past board member of My Sisters Pantry. Their Volunteer of the Year award is named after her. She also participated in the work of the Helping Hands organization at Tacoma Lutheran Retirement Community where she lived. She felt volunteering was a small way to pass on the abundance of blessings she received during her lifetime.
Maxine is survived by her daughter Janice Olson of Olympia (Gordon), her son Jonathon of Phoenix (Beverly) and two grandsons, Eric Strom of Denver and Richard Strom of Davenport, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, her husband and her eldest son James.
At Maxine's request, no services will be held. Those wanting to honor her memory may make a donation in her name to a charity of their choice.
