NICK ENGELS Obituary

Nick Engels Nicholas John Engels, of Puyallup, WA, was surrounded by family when he went home to be with Jesus on Sept. 27, 2016. Nick was born in Tacoma, WA Sept. 23, 1938. He was the oldest of six children. He graduated from Puyallup High School in 1956 before entering the Air Force. When he was stationed in Spokane he met his wife, JoAnn. After serving, he returned to marry JoAnn and raise their family. He began his almost 40-year career as a longshoreman in the early 1960's. Nick was proud of being a longshoreman and the impact he made with the ILWU. Nick enjoyed life. Some of his many passions included spending time with his family especially his grandchildren, a good meal, charity work, playing poker, travel, and reading. Nick is survived by his wife of 8 years, Diane Whitney-Engels, and was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, JoAnn Engels, and his sister Karen. He is also survived by his loving children Nick (Sherri), Joe, Jon (Tawnya), Patty Jo, and Danielle (Dale) Hoyt; his brothers Jon (Carol) and Skip (Darlene), and sisters Kathy (Terry) Callies and Penny (Victor) Boyer. He is also loved by Diane's children Mark (Tanya) Whitney and Scott (Lisa) Whitney, and all his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Services will be held at Puyallup Nazarene Church on Saturday, Oct. 8th, at noon, with a reception to follow. There will be a viewing at Powers Funeral Home in Puyallup on Friday, Oct.7th, from 3 pm to 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to support the Nicole Marie Engels Endowment for Tree House at Mary Bridge Children's Foundation, PO Box 5296, Tacoma, WA 98415.

It is with great sorrow I read of Nick's passing! Nick and I grew up together attending Waller Road Grade School, then on to Puyallup High.
I knew his entire family very well, also. Nick and I both played for local baseball and basketball teams, where we were very competitive.
He was passionate about those things of interest, and as a sometime coach I had a deep appreciation for his dependability!
To my friend Nick, Rest in Peace!

To the family of Nick, we are so sorry for your loss. He was a great guy and will be missed by many.

Jim was not only a former longshoreman with Nick but we were and still are members of Graffiti Vintage Car Club, Nick was a member for many years and most of you knew him to be the kind of guy that was involved in projects that would benefit the community. He was the member who suggested the clubs first yearly fund raising dance. This dance was very successful and along with other events helped the clubs charity fund which enabled the club to help the community for many years. This was the kind of guy Nick was and it made him and others happy.

He will always live in our hearts and memories.

God blesses me with such love all my life! I am proud to be Nick's sister! I have such cherished memories of my life with Nick and his family. I not only had a wonderful oldest brother, but just spending fun times over the years with his children was the frosting on the cake and truly a blessing in my life...Cherished memories! We have had time in Washington, Puerto Vallarta, Alaska, and will always remember what fun we have had!
so blessed to have quality time visiting with him in August and I will cherish those times and remember him that way! I will always remember his face when we prayed with him. Nick loved his family and was so generous, loving and kind. So many cherished memories and just so thankful that God gave me Nick to make life so special...I love you Nick and you are always with me! See you in heaven one day soon! Kathy

I'm so sorry for your loss. I remember at the Home Interior conferences, i was always a little scared of Nick, lol. But as time went by and I got to talk to him one on one, I realized what a nice wonderful caring man he was. I got to talk to him a few times on my Frito lay route, and he was always telling me i could bring my kids to the lake house. That was so nice, and I appreciated the talks we had. It is such a comfort to know that one day we will all be reunited with our loved ones, something to hold on too. Prayers and love goes out to you all.

I am so proud to be Nick's brother-in-law. I love him very much. There are three words that truly describe Nick - Loving, Caring, and Giving. His love for his family was an example for all of us to follow. I am excited that he knew Jesus as his savior. He is now with Jesus and other family members in heaven and I look forward to seeing him again when I go to be with Jesus. Blessings to all who mourn his death.
