Ann Schwein Obituary

Ann Lynn (Smith) Schwein, 87, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of April 9, 2025, at Lutheran Community Home. She was born July 10, 1937, in Bedford, Indiana to the late Granger H. and Ruth (Myers) Smith.

Ann was a 1955 graduate of Seymour High School. On September 26, 1957, she married Richard Dean Schwein in the Brownstown Christian Church. She received her Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in education from Indiana University. An educator in the Seymour School system from 1973 to 1999, Ann taught 4th grade for three years at Lincoln School and then 14 years at Brown School. She helped develop a full-time program for accelerated students in the Seymour REACH program and was one of the first full-time teachers in this class, teaching 4th and 5th grade math and history for nine years at Emerson. Ann was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Seymour. She was a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers, the Third Monday Book Club, and Fantastic Fictioneers; a board member of Friends of the Library, and a former member of the Hospital Guild of Schneck Medical Center. She was also a longtime volunteer and supporter of the Lutheran Community Home. Ann traveled extensively, visiting all 50 states plus Germany, Spain, the British Isles, and Israel. She especially enjoyed the beauty of the U.S. National Parks. Ann was an avid reader, a collector of Santa figures, and enjoyed doing all sorts of needlework and quilting. In fact, Ann was so accomplished as a needleworker that she once had a chair with a needlepoint seat on display at the Indiana State Museum.

Left behind to cherish Ann's memory are her children, Lori (Ty) Robinson, Kathy (Ron) Rieckers, Steve (Evelyn) Schwein, and Sally (Brad) Wicks; grandchildren, David (Joliet) Robinson, Ross Rieckers, Katie (Daniel) Rautenkranz, Felicia (Ryan) Schneider, Phillip Schwein, Lauren Schwein, and Allison Schwein; and seven great-grandchildren; Jolene and Josephine Robinson; Heidi and Ava Rautenkranz;, and Elsie, John, and Luke Schneider.

She is preceded in death by her parents, listed above; and her beloved husband, Richard Dean Schwein.

Funeral services for Ann will be held Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 1501 Gaiser Drive, Seymour. Pastor Jeffrey Stuckwisch and Pastor Bradley Akey will officiate. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Ann will be laid to rest immediately following at Riverview Cemetery.
