Charles Kidwell Obituary

Charles Douglas (Doug) Kidwell, age 90, of Brownstown, passed away on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at Schneck Medical Center, Seymour.

Doug was a faithful, long-time member of Brownstown Christian Church where he served in various ministries over the years. One of his early contributions was the creation and construction of the original Living Christmas Tree.

He was an Ironworker and member of the Ironworkers Local 22 for nearly 40 years. He served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956 where he played on the military football team while stationed in Germany. He was a past President of the Brownstown Park Board, and he was a member of the Washington Masonic Lodge #13 in Brownstown since 1960. He enjoyed participation in the WBBCI Airstream Club and was a member and board president of the Land Yacht Harbor Airstream Park in Melbourne, Florida, where he spent more than 25 winters.

Doug loved his family immensely and treasured spending time with them. Even with four kids to follow and watch, he never missed a sporting or other event any of them participated in. He supported each of his kids with his whole heart. He also loved traveling and vacationing with his family and friends.

He was an avid motorcycle rider (and collector) until he was 87 years old. He and his riding buddies made trips all across Indiana and occasionally to Tennessee and Kentucky once including a trip to challenge the Tail of the Dragon at Deal's Gap, North Carolina, while in his early 80's. He was also a big I.U. basketball fan, and he had a passion for fishing and boating at Lake Monroe. Doug was very social and never met a stranger.

Born on April 5, 1933, in Mitchell, he was the son of John Fed and Gladys (Nugent) Kidwell, both of whom preceded him in death. On January 4, 1957, in Bedford, he married Mary Louise Hawkins, and she preceded him in death on September 16, 1999. He was also preceded in death by a son, Clark David Kidwell; a daughter, Kimberly Ann Schrink and son-in-law Jimmy Schrink; two brothers, Robert "Bob" Kidwell, and Fed Kidwell, Jr. as well as five brothers-in-law, four sisters-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.

Survivors include a son, Mark Douglas Kidwell of Greenwood; a daughter, Pamela Sue Dunnells of Brownstown; two granddaughters: Courtney (George) Leonard of Bloomington, and Cori (Dyane) Raimondo of Ellettsville; and five great-grandchildren: Jack Leonard, Brady Leonard, Colson Raimondo, Cally Raimondo, and Cylas Raimondo.

As a guy who always loved to joke and make people laugh, Doug's funeral services will be fittingly conducted at 12:00 noon on April Fool's Day - Monday, April 1, 2024, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown. His nephew Pastor Michael Hawkins and Pastor Chris Criminger will be officiating. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 12:00 noon on Monday, April 1, 2024, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc.
