Dorothy "Jody" Waid, 96, of Benton, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2025, at the Ray & Kay Eckstein Hospice Care Center in Paducah.
Dorothy was born on July 27, 1929, in Marshall County, Kentucky, to the late Rufus Lents and Gertrude Lee Lents. In 1937, her family moved to Detroit, Michigan, where they lived for several years before returning to Marshall County. Her first job was in Detroit, where she worked at a Chinese Laundromat, earning 50 cents per day folding clothes. Later on, Dorothy became an L.P.N. and began working in several clinics and doctors' offices, both in Michigan and in Marshall County, as well as in the Purchasing Department for Marshall County Hospital.
Dorothy loved the Lord and was baptized in the Baptist faith by Rev. Frank Young at First Missionary Baptist Church. She was also very artistic and enjoyed drawing, painting, and writing. For years, Dorothy kept journals and diaries that she would write in daily. Some of her favorite pastimes were reading, doing puzzles, and crocheting until eventually her eyesight made it too difficult to continue doing them. She also enjoyed fishing, going to baseball games, and watching boxing. During the summer and spring days, she always enjoyed sitting and relaxing on her front porch with a glass of iced tea. Dorothy also loved big family gatherings and sitting down with her family and friends to play a rousing game of Yahtzee, which she always took very seriously.
She is survived by her two daughters, Dianna Chandler (Jerry) of Benton and Delores Smith of Benton; her son, David Kryzewski of Benton; ten grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Taylor Waid; her two sisters, Iona Marney and Imogene McCormick; her two brothers, Erbis Byron Lents and William Avery Lents; her first husband, Alexander Kryzewski; and her parents, Rufus and Gertrude Lents.
