Our hearts are deeply saddened by the passing of Austin Katayama, age 18. He was a joy to all those in his life that he touched. He was born on February 26th, 1993 and raised in Richland, WA. He died on October 15th, 2011. He is survived by his mother and step-father Earlein and Kevin Smith. Father Michael Katayama. Sister and brother Mikayla and Brayden Smith.

Grandparents; Earl and Bernice Penor, David and Connie Grytness, Y.Bruce and Catherine Katayama. Best friend David Law. Aunts and Uncles; Judy Penor, Jackie and Kevin Templeton, Maxine and Randy Otte, Jaylein and Phil Groves, Wendy and James Petty, Shenen Penor, Earl 'Buddy' Penor, Jenny and Lee Burton, Kimberly and Luke MacRae, Kathy Grytness.

Cousins: Tascina, Tisa, Tiana, Toni, Taye, Justin, Kyler, Brandon, Chase, Sean, Jason, Cody, Kendell, Jeremiah, Riel, Shelly, Colt, Wes, John, Amanda, Danny, James Jr., Desiree, Alexis P., Robert, Shelby, Alexis P., Chase B.

Preceded in death by DeeAnna Penor (Aunt) and Jerry Grytnesf (Uncle.)

He attended Richland High School and Columbia Basin College. He had a strong passion for music and played the drums. He was active in many sports during his life but his favorite was wrestling. He loved to ride dirt bikes, snowboard, boating and surfing. He was creative and artistic with drawings. He enjoyed movies and hanging out with his friends. He was energetic, compassionate, and will be dearly missed by all.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Youth Suicide Prevention Program (YSPP) in honor of Austin.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 23, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Einan's Funeral Home with a reception following to the Knights of Columbus in Richland.

Austin, there are no words that I can put together to say how much I miss you. I remember going to homecoming with you, Logan and Devin. Nobody can replace you and make me laugh the way you did. We had a lot of good times hanging out with friends and it's heartbreaking that you are gone. I miss you and I always will. I will stay strong for you Bud...

Earlein, I've been thinking about you and your family. I can't imagine the pain you must be going through. I'm sorry that I won't be able to make it to the funeral but please know you are in my thoughts and prayers. We are going to miss you greatly there Austin-I know how I feel but cant imagine the hurt and pain your mom and the rest of the family are feeling but we have lots of fond memories of your goofy self and in time we will heal these pains and hopefully beable to move on with you remaining in our hearts forever and ever. Hey Kev, I dont know what to say! Just that time does heal all wounds, and this is one of the biggest. I think of you and Earlein everyday. I am so saddened buy what you have to go through. I know this will be one of the biggest trials you will ever go through and I just want you to know that if you need anything you can count on me! My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I know there is nothing anyone can say right now to bring comfort but in time things will get better. Take care and know so many people love you guys and are there for you and your family! I am Austin Katayamas Aunt. There are not enough words to express the loss we have suffered. Tyvm to everyone for your thoughts and prayers at this extremely difficult time. Austin was an amazing young man and he will live on in all of us. To my sister Inky we love you and we will be here for you and yours no matter what. RIP Austin you will be sorely missed by all.
