Jacob Stappler Obituary


July 11, 1920 - March 23, 2008

Jake was born on July 11, 1920, in Devils Lake, North Dakota. He was a graduate of Central Washington University and an undergraduate of North Dakota State, Fargo, North Dakota. Advanced work at Whitworth College Spokane, WA; Eastern Washington University, Cheney, WA; WSU Pullman, WA; U of W, Seattle, WA and OSU in Oregon.

Jake entered into the United States Navy on June 13, 1939, and served on the USS Washington and in 1942 began his submarine service aboard the USS Indianapolis. He would later work for Hanford, then became a teacher and wrestling coach for McLoughlin Junior High and Pasco High School. Jake retired as an agent for New York Life Insurance Co.

Jake had many interests. He studied design under Sarah Spurgeon at Central Washington and trained as a metal sculptor under the former renowned metallurgist, Walter Culbert, Columbia Basin College, Pasco, WA. Last but not least, Jake was involved with concert band for eight years, playing first clarinet and baritone saxophone.

Jake is survived by his loving wife Betty and his stepchildren: Sonia Softich, Glenna Gibson, Alixandra Reeves. Grandchildren are Marci Koshowski, Marc Michelson, Scott Lepka, Sarah Davis, Leslie, Anna and Ciara Gibson; Josh Garza, Sam and Tyra Softich, AJ, Lepka and Rayce Reeves.
