JOHN F. SULLIVAN JR. Brunswick, Maine - John Francis Sullivan Jr. of Baribeau Drive died Sunday, May 13 at Mid Coast Senior Health Center. He was born on June 23, 1924 in Pasco, Washington, the son of John Francis and Ellen Sullivan. He graduated from Pasco High School in 1942. He attended the University of Washington in Seattle, where he received Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Chemical Engineering. He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. Mr. Sullivan served 3 years in the U.S. Navy in World War II and was discharged as a Lt(jg). John retired from Bath Iron Works in 1983, where he was president and chief executive officer. He was also vice president of the BIW parent company, Congoleum, during that time. Prior to joining BIW, he was executive vice president of Hayes Albion Corporation, president of E.F. Houghton Company, and earlier in his career spent 19 years with General Electric, serving in a number of management positions. During his business career and in retirement, John was active on many boards, including the Shipbuilders of America, the Licensing Executives Council of America, Rotary Club, Canal Bank, Depositors Bank, Shoreline Mental Health, Maine Maritime Museum, Maine Maritime Academy, Pejepscot Historical Society, Maine State Music Theater, Bath Memorial Hospital, and the Harpswell Republican Club. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America as a scout master. John was presented the "Award of Merit" by the Treasury Department, the "Robert N. Thompson Award for Outstanding Civilian Leadership" from the Navy League of the United States, and the "Distinguished Citizen Award" by the Pine Tree Council of the Boy Scouts of America. John served on the Regional Selection Panel of the White House Fellowships Awards, and was listed in Who's Who in America, 43rd Edition. John was a member of St. Charles Church and was active on the Parish Council and as a Eucharistic Minister. He also served for a short time on the St. John's School Board. He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Glenna (McIlraith) whom he married in June of 1949, and three children, John Kelly Sullivan (Elizabeth) of Cape Elizabeth, Thomas Kevin Sullivan (Susan) of Brunswick, and Mary Elizabeth Sullivan Ludlum (Stephen) of Brunswick; five grandchildren, Erin Sullivan DeMartino (Randall), Liam Sullivan, Kimberly Sullivan, Paul Sullivan, and Sarah Ludlum; and great-granddaughter, Lily DeMartino. His family is especially grateful for the compassionate care and support provided by Aging Excellence and the staff of Thornton Hall. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, May 20th from 2-4 pm at Stetson's Funeral Home, 12 Federal St. in Brunswick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Charles Borromeo Church-All Saints Parish, 132 McKeen St., Brunswick, on Monday, May 21st at 10 AM.
