PAULA EDITH GARLAND

PAULA EDITH (LANCE) GARLAND Mrs. Paula Edith (Lance) Garland, born on March 20, 1915 in Brooklyn, New York, to Edith Cohn and Robert Lance, passed away at age 103 on September 11, 2018 in Richland, Washington. She grew up during the Depression in Brooklyn, but remembers a happy childhood where she got her first love of books, classical music, opera, and theater. She was a graduate of the first class of Brooklyn College in 1935, with a degree in physical education. Paula married the late Daniel L. Garland in 1939. She is predeceased by her son, Charles; brothers Everett and Bernard; niece Robin Hooper and nephew Mark Lance, and dear in-laws Millicent Linn and Manny Goldberg. Paula is survived by her sons, Stephen (Ardie), Robert (Marilyn Klompus), Eric (Ellen), and Marc; brother Herbert; grandchildren Andrea, Rachel (Morris Levin), Shaina (Shalom Garson), Daniel, Emily (Mike Klupa), Andrew, and James; great-grandchildren Pardes, Keter, Ness, Lia, Ledicia, Chaya, and Ella; nieces Karen Klaber, Amy Lance, and Maxine Hammett, and nephews Jeffrey and Michael Lance. Paula was a lifelong lover of opera, the arts, reading, mahjong, and volunteering at the Richland library and Allied Arts. She was an inveterate optimist, a proud liberal, and actively engaged in every community where Dan's career led them. She was a member and officer of Congregation Beth Sholom, which she and Dan joined when they moved to the Tri-Cities in 1971 and became cherished members of many extended families. She was a longtime member and officer of the League of Women Voters and served as President of the Pacific Northwest branch of Sisterhood and a Vice President of the National Board. The Garland family is extremely grateful for the love and support of her caregivers over the past many years, particularly Jill Crosier. Funeral services, officiated by Bernard Busch, were held on Wednesday, September 12 at Einan's Funeral Home in Richland.
