His sisters said he prayed her into Heaven. She was born November 1, 1936, in McCrory, Woodruff Co., Arkansas, to William Earnest Cole & Ruth Orvis Dazzle (Holder) Cole. The youngest of five children, she joined her brother, Earnest Eugene "Gene" Cole, and three sisters, Mary Elizabeth Cole, Betty Louise Cole, & Thelma Rae Cole. "Gene", Thelma and their brother-in-law, Clyde Kennedy, have preceded her in death, as have her parents and husband of 56 years, Troy Edward Ivey, in 2011. Ruth moved to the Tri-Cities in 1944, with her family. She attended grade school in Kennewick, graduating from Kennewick High School in 1954. She worked for a Hanford company in Richland. She was downtown Kennewick with a friend, when Troy drove by in a new red convertible. She told her friend, "Someday I'm going to marry that guy!" Sometime later she met him at a church potluck in the park. They started dating. He had returned as a decorated U.S. Army Corporal from the Korean War and was employed with his father's new business, Doyle Ivey & Sons Excavation. They married, December 3, 1955, at the Kennewick Church of the Nazarene, on Washington Street. They moved to Finley in March of 1957, which was their home until October 31, 2013, when Ruth moved to a Canyon Lakes condo in time for her 77th birthday. Ivey Excavating was in business over 50 years until Troy & Ruth sold it in 1996, when they retired. Their lives were blessed with five children, their families and many friends. Both were active members of the Kennewick Church of the Nazarene, serving on numerous boards through the years and participating in the new building on Union Street. Their particular goal was taking their grandchildren to Sunday School, which was very successful. Ruth went to work for Finley School District part-time after her daughter, Dee Dee, told the Principal that her mom could fill a vacancy in the Office. She went fulltime in 1974, retiring in 1996. She also was an active partner in the Excavating business, serving as bookkeeper. Ruth loved cooking, especially good Southern dishes like her fruitcake loaded with pecans & dates and delicious pies. She enjoyed her membership in the Red Hat Society. Never idle, she kept up with family & friends, a huge yard, jobs and recreation opportunities, including Wallowa Lake.
