Douglas Burt Obituary

Douglas Burt
Hawley - Douglas Steven Burt, age 63, of Hawley died peacefully at home on Thursday, December 10, 2020.
Born July 25, 1957, in Glen Ridge, NJ, Doug was the son of Shirley J. (Bebee) Burt Peeters of Hawley and the late Robert Enderlyn Burt. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Richard Burt. He is survived by his partner of 21 years, David Goldstein of Hawley; his mother, Shirley and her husband Rich; one stepbrother, Bruce Peeters of Wappingers Falls, NY; one stepsister, Lynn Scafidi and her husband Vincent, as well as several cousins.
Doug graduated from Memorial High School in Cedar Grove, NJ and the Williamsport Community College which is part of Penn State University.
Prior to retirement, Doug provided independent moving services for national and international relocation companies for the handling of special merchandise like pianos, antiques, artwork, and pool tables. Earlier in his career, he helped run the Pocono Pines Motor Inn with his parents during their entire ownership.
He was a talented craftsman and skilled in every aspect of construction, building his own one-of-a-kind house from the ground up. He was best known as an extraordinary stonemason and metal fabricator. His work can be seen all over the area and will remain a lasting legacy of his contribution to our community. You can see an example of his stonework at the entrance to Holiday Drive in Hawley.
Doug was truly one of a kind. He had a wicked sense of humor. He was an Adam Owen's groupie and could be found anytime and anywhere Adam was hosting Trivia Night. Anyone brave enough to take him on was sure to be disappointed because his winning streak was unstoppable. He was kind and caring, always there for a friend or a neighbor in need. Doug also supported the community by lending his construction and technical talents to the Ritz Theatre over many years. And, like many local residents, he was an extra in the 1986 film "Playing for Keeps" when it was produced right here in Hawley.
In the summer, you were unlikely to see Doug around town because he and David would spend every weekend at the Hillside Campgrounds in Gibson, PA, with their extended Hillside family. Even there his talents have left a lasting memory with the addition of the new walkway around the rec hall and the beautiful deck surrounding their cabin. Everyone knew when Doug had arrived because no matter where he went, he wore his trademark #12 football jersey.
A celebration of Doug's life will be held at a future date to be announced.
Private cremation will be held at Lake Region Crematory, Lake Ariel. His final resting place will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Paupack, PA.
