Fr. Vaughan was very special to the entire McGraw Family. First as a dear friend to my grandfather (the late A. Willard J. McGraw) and to all of the next generation McGraw's. He was the epitome of of grace, faith and love and I consider myself beyond blessed to have been given the opportunity to have him in my family's life. Until we meet again, may God hold you in his hands. Nancy McGraw George

Father Vaughan was a fantastic parish priest and a fixture in the East Side community. He was such a kind soul and always had words of encouragement and wisdom for all who crossed his path. He had a very strong bond with my parents and provided my family with comfort and kind words when they passed. His legacy at Sacred Heart will live on forever.

Fr.Vaughan,
You were a wonderful priest while we were parishioners at Sacred Heart. Your warm and comforting ways towards all will always be remembered. Christmas Eve will never be the same without you singing Bing Crosby at mass. Rest In Peace among God’s angels. The Gustin Family

I was a little girl who wasn’t expected to survive when the Rev. James Vaughan was summoned from the St. Ambrose Rectory in Latham to administer the Last Rites at my hospital bedside six decades ago.
But prayers offered up by the young parish priest before leaving a tiny statue of the Blessed Mother beside my emaciated earthly shell were assuredly heard because Albany Medical Center doctors could only describe my subsequent full recovery from a lethal strain of spinal meningitis as “miraculous.”
Half a century would pass before my cherished childhood statue and I reunited with Father Vaughan at Sacred Heart in Troy under circumstances that further strengthened my faith.
While preparing for a major surgery at Albany Med a few years later, I tucked my statue of Mary inside of my suitcase as a reassuring reminder of a long ago healing.
But the greatest source of comfort was that Father Vaughan, whose devotion to his priestly vocation was awe-inspiring, had promised to keep me in his prayers.
Our loss is truly Heaven’s gain.

I remember Father Vaughn coming to St. Mary's School just after being ordained. He had a beautiful smile and a twinkle in his eyes that never left him. He had beautiful spirit that never grew old. May you rest in peace and love, Father.

Father Vaughan was an important part of my life growing up in the nine years that I spent at Sacred Heart School. The School was a nurturing environment due to all of the faculty and staff that worked there and Father Vaughan was a big part of making the School the type of place that it should be. Always friendly. Always kind. Always giving. Always there. He will be missed. On his own birthday he would buy ice cream for all of the Students at the School. A symbol of his giving nature. God Bless Father Vaughan.

Father Vaughan will be missed. As a part of Sacred Heart School and Church since 1973 so many lives were made better by having Father Vaughan as part of their scholastic and liturgical lives. With so many people that he crossed paths with over the years it always amazed me that he was able to recall most of them even after years of not seeing them. He was a kind mentor to me as an altar server at Sacred Heart. One of the things that shows the true kindness and giving nature of Father Vaughan is his annual birthday ice cream gifts to the students of the school. For as many gifts that Father Vaughan would receive on his birthday from students and parishioners he was still giving back by buying ice cream for all of the students. From his Mickeys to Norte Dame to the Yankees to the Giants he had many interests. I’m so glad that as I spent nine years at Sacred Heart and years beyond attending the Church that Father Vaughan was a part of it. God Bless Father Vaughan and Thank You.

I was a 4 year old child when I first meet Fr. Vaughan. I last saw him a year ago as a 53 year old Man with a wife and a family of three. The 50 years I know him, he became one of my spiritual role models. Every time I came back to Troy to see family, Fr. Vaughan was always on the list to stop and see. Each time I saw him I was inspired to be closer to God. Between Fr. and Sr. Anne Queen I have had the too most amazing, faithful role models since I was a little kid. God Bless you father Vaughan and tell God I said hi. Leo Fitzsimmons, your student since 1970.

Father James was a funny, good natured and happy man. He was one of my favorite priests. Ironically, one of my cousins in Ireland also known as Father James passed away last month, leaving with only one known priest in my family; he lives in Ireland and in Nigeria depending on the season. I used to love to call our Father Vaughan a "VAUGHAN Again Chrisitians" which he seemed to enjoy being call. May God Bless our beloved friend who is with God this very moment.

Father Vaughn was truly an angel on earth. He provided much comfort to our family in our times of need. I remember him telling me that he was looking forward to the day that he would finally meet his mother who passed before he got to know her, so while we will grieve his passing, we take comfort in knowing that he has gone to his eternal reward and is reunited with her and all of his loved ones. We were blessed to have you in our lives. The McGraw Family

Fr. Jimmy, as his family called him, was truly a holy, generous, loving man. I know he inspired and had a great influence on many people. You truly felt that you were in the presence of someone very close to God when you spoke with him. He was very curious about Heaven and couldn't wait to see his family again. I know he is there now visiting with everyone, as he loved to do here on earth. You will be greatly missed Father Jim. Love always, Sue Marcy
