John Burek Obituary

OSCS (SW) John Stanley Burek, Jr. USN Ret. CHARLESTON, SC - OSCS (SW) John Stanley Burek Jr. USN Ret., 60, of Charleston, SC, died Sunday, September 23, 2012. A celebration of his life will be celebrated Saturday, September 29, 2012, in the American Legion Post 147, James Island at 12:00 pm. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR NORTHWOODS CHAPEL. Sr. Chief Burek was born December 7, 1951 in Troy, NY, son of the late John Stanley Burek, Sr. and the late Frances Louise Pelton Burek. He retired as a Sr. Chief in the US Navy and was an avid Carolina Gamecock and Buffalo Bills fan. He was a member of the American Legion Post 147, especially enjoyed taking cruises with his sister, Marge and also enjoyed hunting and fishing. “I've traveled the world and done everything I've wanted to do. I've lived a good life.” He is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Burek and Melissa Burek both of Summerville, SC; son, John Burek III (Holly Phillips) of Charleston, SC; sisters Margaret Verville of Troy, NY and Barbara Burek of Clifton Park, NY; brothers: Francis P. Burek (Tina) of Troy, NY, Michael Burek (Ethel) of Wyantskill, NY, Thomas Burek of Carmel, IN; grandchildren: Adam Vargo, Jasmin Vargo and Abagail Mixon and one on the way; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and large extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Elizabeth Griffin and Donna Williams. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 5900 Core Road, Suite 504, North Charleston, SC 29406.
