WATERFORD -Joseph J. Lutz, 80, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 17, 2023.Born in Albany, he was the son of the late Leo and Mary Scherr Lutz. He graduated from Albany High School in 1961. Joe later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1973 and a Master of Science in Education in 1982 from the College of St. Rose.Joe worked at the Albany Boys Club until 1965 and then became the assistant executive director of the Lansingburgh Boys Club. In 1968, he became the executive director of Big Brother ' Big Sister of Albany and Schenectady. In 1973, he took on the role of Attendance Teacher for the Lansingburgh School District, where he would remain until his retirement in 2009. Joe also volunteered at the Cohoes Community Center since it opened in 1972 as a Youth Coordinator and then eventually ran its famous Bingo for over 40 years, where he became known as 'Joe Bingo.'Joe received many honors throughout his life, including the 1961 Albany Boys Club Boy of the Year Award, the 1968 Albany Jaycees Man of the Year Award, the 1982 Troy PBA Gold Shield Award, the 1990 PTA Distinguished Service Award-NYS, and the 1998 Troy City Humanitarian Award.Always a sports enthusiast, over the last 60 years Joe has coached and managed baseball Little League, Babe Ruth, Independent, Connie Mack, American League and NYS Moose Baseball teams. He also was a Kansas City Royals Instructor at the KC Royals Baseball Academy along as a major league scout with Brewer, Padres and most recently with Marlins. Joe's love of baseball was officially recognized in 2022 when he was inducted into the NYS Baseball Hall of Fame.Joe was the brother of Barbara and Tom Lutz. He is also survived by several close and dear friends.A memorial service will be held Thursday, November 2, 2023, at 7 p.m. in the Philip J. I knew a Joe Lutz who coached a team in the National Little League around 1964. While I played for Sully´s M&Rs, Mr . Lutz coached the Star Supers, but was a real positive influence for many young men who had the privilege to interact with him at the baseball field. I´m not a 100% sure this is the same Joe Lutz, but it certainly sounds like this man had the same qualities of the coach I crossed paths with over 50 years ago.

Dear Barbara and Thomas,
Very few people can say that they made a significant difference in thousands of lives. Joseph was that special kind of person. He devoted his life to making sure that students knew that attendance at school was a must. Whether he was teaching the fundamentals of the game he so loved or extending a helpful hand to those in need, Joseph was always willing to help. He will be surely missed and long remembered by countless former students, faculty and friends.
