Rick Adams Obituary

ADAMS, RICK TROY - Rick Adams, 70, of Troy died Thursday, March 17, 2011, at St. Peter's Hospice Inn in Albany after a short illness. Born and raised in Newton, Massachusetts, he was son of the late Winslow and Elizabeth Adams. He is survived by his beloved children Wendy and Scott Adams, and his brother Winslow H. Adams. Rick earned a Bachelor's degree from Wesleyan University in Connecticut and a Master's in education from The College of St. Rose. Early in his career, he served for two years as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy, and worked in the development offices at Union College and the Emma Willard School. Rick's love of children and his desire to be of service to others led him to his ultimate profession as a teacher. He designed and co-taught the innovative alternative education program at the Doyle Middle School in Troy, and over 22 years, improved the lives of countless teenagers and their families. He was a loving, one-of-a-kind, father, teacher, spiritual seeker, runner, dancer, skier, volunteer and friend. He ran five marathons, including Boston, and travelled in 40 countries on all seven continents. His favorite international destination was Bali, Indonesia, where he spent half his time since his retirement. As a volunteer, he worked with Unity House, the Neighborhood Action Council of Troy, and at a Domestic Violence Shelter. It is hard to know that Dad is gone from this physical plane. But there is relief in knowing that while he has left his body behind, he remains whole, vibrant and present in our hearts. Calling hours will be held at Kellas Commons at Emma Willard School in Troy on Saturday, March 26th from 1:00 - 2:30pm. A service will follow at 2:30. Please accept my sympathy at this time. My family spent time with Rick while we visited our own father at the hospital. We knew that Rick was a special person by the friends and family who came to see him and also his waves and smiles that he gave us when he could. I will never forget the song of "William" he sang to me one Saturday afternoon while I sat with my father. I am deeply sorry for your loss.

Dear Scott and family,

I was so saddened to hear about your dad's death. Having only met him a few times, it was evident how much he enjoyed life and embracing opportunities, traveling to Bali and impacting young people's lives. These days are challenging and I wish you peace and comfort in remembering your dad and celebrating his life.

Wendy is bringing a big hug from NYC for you all!

xoxo-

Scott and Wendy ~ I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of your Dad and my very Dear Friend Rick. Rick was the angel that came into my young life when i was stricken with cancer @ 12 years old and he was assigned as my tutor. that was the very beginning of a lifelong friendship. I cant tell you how incredible this man was to me and my family. He helped me through the most difficult time in my life. I was frequently hospitalized throughout my ordeal and one time i was so tired of fighting, being sick, ready to give up when rick came to my side with lyrics to bette midlers "the rose" written out in his wonderful handwriting. it was such a touching moment and the most cherished memory i have of rick. someone told me that the good people of this earth are on loan to us from heaven, its sad when they leave us, but we are truly blessed to have had them touch our lives. rick was definitely and always will be that good person on loan from heaven. shedding many tears for you today, Rick, but so blessed to have known you.

Wendy, Scott and Eri,

You are all in our thoughts at this time. Your Dad wasn't with us nearly long enough but did so much in the years he had.

Rick was such a caring and compassionate person and gave so much of himself in all he did. He lives on not only in your hearts, but in the minds and hearts of the many people whose lifes he touched.
