William Nightingale Obituary

William Laurel Nightingale passed into glory on October 2, 2023. He was 95 years old. He was preceded by his dear wife, Ellinor in 2017. A native of Hodgdon, Maine, Will came to faith after his mother wrote to him about attending evangelistic meetings in a potato field near his hometown. He said, 'I have to go home. Something's wrong with Mother.' He rushed home and found that, instead of something wrong, his mother had found peace with God through receiving Jesus as her Savior. Will had a special heart for small group Bible studies and prayer as a way for Christians to grow in their faith. Will began playing the violin at age 4 and played in a quartet on Radio Tokyo while serving in the US Army during and after World War 2. In Japan, he developed a love for other cultures and languages and felt a deep love of Christian ministry. After returning to the States he attended Gordon College where he studied missions and sang in a men's quartet. Later in life, he completed a Master's of Divinity at Mid-America Theological Seminary. He also played the violin in chamber groups in Chatham, his local church, and the Kenny Love Orchestra in Kinderhook Will was a teacher in heart and in practice. He used to say that he spent 28 years in the fourth grade. Whether it was teaching at the elementary school, working with others to build his own home, or serving as an assistant pastor, he loved engaging with people and learning with them. Mr. Nightingale is survived by his son, Dr. Luke Nightingale, and two daughters, Carol Koch and LeAnne Andersen, their families, and his beloved church family. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 on Saturday, October 14th at Brunswick Baptist Church. https://www.lastingmemories.com/william-laurel-nightingale

Your birthday is coming up at the end of this month. I miss going to the card store to find a card that will make you laugh out loud! (Oh, that laugh!) You would enjoy this nice pre-fall day. I miss our phone calls too. R.I.P. my friend.

It sure would be great to hear one of Will's quirky jokes or stories today. Among the stories, plays, and screenplays I've been working on, I've been working on a short piece inspired by Ellinor's self-published memoir. I told Will about my plans about a year or so before he died. They'd both get a kick out of it. I told her I'd make her a star. Of course, she and Will are shining brightly in Heaven as I type this. Great memories, right?

I volunteered at the nursing home Will was staying at. Will was such a kind man with so much love in his heart. I went to see him everyday even if he didn´t need care at the time. He always greeted me with a smile and we always had wonderful conversation. He spoke to me about his wonderful wife and children. Hes traveling times in Japan. And he always would ask me to find him a red watch. I regret not getting him his dream red watch. My heart goes out to his family, you were truly blessed. And I´m so unbelievably thankful to have med William Nightingale

My "dad", my mentor, a spiritual guide, a funny friend to exchange corny jokes with, a consistent example of walking the Christian path, and an encourager throughout a large part of my adult life. My memories of the time I spent with Will and Ellinor are filled with laughter as well as sound perspective. I remember our circuitous walk around Chinatown to find Will's favorite restaurant (he'd forgotten the name, the street, etc, but knew that it had a "crooked door". After Ellinor and exchanged shoes to relieve our aching feet, he finally found it! Only Will could do that!) Will and Ellinor took me under wing (he drove a long distance several times to bring me "home" for a visit to "the country" and didn't laugh when I had a hard time adjusting to the sound of scampering squirrels changing acorns in the night). We've kept in touch by phone and letters over the years, so when my recent card to him was returned I googled his name and discovered this obit entry. No worries, I know he is in the Lord's arms and reunited with Ellinor and will save a spot for me in the choir where we can sing together like old times. R.I.P., my friend, I'll see you again! (hey, I rhymed!) With love from Karen the actor.

Luke, Carol & LeAnne,
I am so sorry for your loss. I was not able to attend your dad's service as my mother was buried only the day before. We rejoice together as our loved one's are now with their Lord!
