Denise Nye Obituary

NYE, Denise, born May 24, 1946 and died very suddenly on March 13, 2006. She was born in Paris, France and moved to Montreal, Canada at age five. Her parents had foresight to put her in English speaking schools but she spoke French at home. She graduated from McGill University with a degree in English Literature. She met her husband, Derald Nye, in February 1972 in Australia and was married in Boulder, CO on April 9, 1973. She became a U.S. Citizen in 1981. She worked at IBM for 20 years, retiring in May 2001. She and her husband traveled to all the continents and over 90 countries and island groups. They had recently returned from the worlds most remote inhabited island, Tristan da Cunha. She had traveled to 28 total and annular solar eclipses and was scheduled to leave on her 29th eclipse trip on the 17th of March. She and her husband were honored when the International Astromical Union approved the name of asteroid number 3685, DERDENYE for them. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rachel Rabinowicz Blum and Towia Blum and her father-in-law, Victor A. Nye. She is survived by her husband, Derald Nye; one brother, Armand Blum, Paris, France; stepfather, Peretz Shuman; stepsisters, Genie Dresher, Doris Rosenthal all of Montreal, Canada and Rona Krawczyk of Toronto, Canada; mother-in-law, Mildred Nye and sister-in-law, Marilyn Hodges and husband, S. Burt Hodges, Sacramento, CA; four nephews, Jeff Hodges and wife, Wendy Wheaton, Redwood City, CA, Dr. Scott Hodges, Santa Barbara, CA, Eric Hodges, Berkley, CA and Tobie Blum, Montreal, Canada; one niece, Yuko Blum, Montreal, Canada. She wished to be cremated and have her ashes spread in the Seychelles. There will be a celebration of life held at a later date. Arrangements by BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

Denise was a good buddy. It was a privilege to work with her for several years. She had a superb chocolate collection hidden in her desk, and took some great photos in France, one of which I still have. Fair winds and following sun, Denise.

Derald, I worked with Denise in the Information Development area at IBM. Her dry sense of humor and quick wit were always endearing characteristics to me. I envied the traveling that the two of you were able to do and many of us lived vicariously through her. She brought in picture and stories of all of your adventures. She definitely had her priorities straight and was able to fill her live to the fullest. Not many people can have that said about them in the end. I know that you and all her family and friends will miss her immensely, but she will always live on in your memories of all the great times you had together.
