Frances WERNER Obituary

WERNER, Frances Watson (1926 - 2016) After a long energetic life dedicated to the conservation of wildlife in Arizona, Frances Watson Werner died on September 30, 2016 at the age of 90. She was born and raised in South Barre, Vermont, and attended the University of Vermont where she received bachelors and masters degrees in zoology. She met a young professor, Floyd Werner, there who she married in 1952. Their daughter Susan was born in 1953, and they moved to Tucson early in 1954 when Floyd was hired by the Entomology Department at the University of Arizona. Sons William and John were born in Tucson. Frances was an active volunteer for over 50 years helping in schools and political campaigns. In 1980 she was appointed to the Arizona Game and Fish Commission where she served for ten years. In the 1990s, she was appointed to the Bureau of Land Management Resource Advisory Council, which she chaired for several years. She received several major awards and was inducted into the Arizona Outdoor Hall of Fame in 2009. Locally, she worked on trail access and on Pima County's Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan. Frances was selfless in giving. She supported her husband and three children in every way imaginable. Frances is survived by daughter, Susan (Bruce Ackerman) of Montrose, CO; sons, William of Phoenix and John (Sally) of Kingman. Susan,

I remember fondly meeting your Mom many years ago. She was a lively, interesting woman who leaves a "can do" attitude to life's challenges. It was a deep honor to have known her.

I remember her as a pretty good cook, when she was at Susan's in Steamboat. Always sweet and chatty. I'm sure her service will be as lovely as she was.

FRANCES WERNER WAS THE "TYPE SPECIMEN" for the "activist little ole lady in tennis shoes" -her self-description which she loved. She also loved and worked tirelessly for AZ wildlife and habitat. Her strong leadership brought many people into the WL Field and encouraged many of us when the going got tough .A GOOD PERSON TAKEN TOO SOON.

Dear Susan and family,
I read today, in the AZ Daily Star, of your mother's passing. Though it was in September, I can imagine that your sadness lingers.
I can send where you got your love of the outdoors. What a remarkable woman she must have been.
I have remembered you on many occasions since I drive by your old house on Jackson often. My mom still lives at the corner of Tucson Blvd. and Lind Rd. She is 86. My husband and I live near the Racquet Club. We're in the old neighborhood every day.
Best wishes. It would be nice if our paths crossed again. Malana
