George Brownlee Obituary
George Wheeler-Brownlee passed away on November 2, 2025 in Tucson, AZ, at the age of 87. George was a Tucson-based artist, educator, and ideas person whose life braided studio craft with a curiosity about how imagination becomes visible in the world.
Born on March 2, 1938 in Tucson, AZ to Arthur and Stella Brownlee, George grew up with a deep appreciation for hard work, craftsmanship, and learning. Educated at the University of Arizona, George completed a master's thesis in 1968-Multiple plate printmaking, vehicle for a journey into the invisible-a title that hints at his lifelong fascination with perception, process, and the unseen structures inside artwork. In the mid-1980s, he published "Imagination: The Connection Enigma" in the Journal of Creative Behavior, reflecting his belief that imagination (our private spark) and creativity (our public action) are partners in any meaningful making.
A longtime Tucson resident, George taught and mentored in the arts, including work associated with the University of Arizona printmaking community; he went on to teach in several settings. Later in his life, he ran Wheeler Initiatives-a small, Tucson-based consultancy-through which he was graphic designer and technical writer. George's intellectual curiosity ranged widely. Never to be one to back down from a challenge or a debate, he wrote and spoke about creativity and contributed public commentary in civic forums.
Beyond work, George found joy in computer coding, volunteering, and tinkering with his electric car and tricycle. He loved simple pleasures like a good cup of coffee with his mother.
George is survived by children Harlan Brownlee, Leah Beck, Amber Frantz, and John Brownlee and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, one brother, two sisters, and two grandchildren.
A secular celebration of life will be held at Saguaro Christian Church, 8302 E Broadway Blvd, Tucson, AZ 85710, on Friday, November 28, 2025, from 4:30-6:00 PM. All who knew George are welcome to attend and share memories.
In lieu of flowers, and to honor George, please support the Humane Society of Southern Arizona or a young artist. He leaves us with a reminder to notice and appreciate beauty, challenge authority, and remain curious.
He will be deeply missed.
