Joan Moga Herner

1938 - 2025

Joan (Summers) Moga Herner, aged 87, passed away suddenly on November 1st, 2025, in Tucson, Arizona. Born in Frederick, Maryland, to Claggett Thomas Summers and Helen Rebecca (Sanders) Summers, Joan lived a life centered on family, compassion, and quiet strength. Throughout her life, she carried a remarkable devotion to her family - especially her three sons, who remained the center of her world from their first breath to her last.

Joan began her career as a registered nurse and later returned to the profession after raising her boys, working in kidney dialysis. She cared for her patients with dedication, warmth, and the same tenderness she offered to those she loved most.

Joan was immensely proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchild celebrating every achievement and milestone. Her joy watching soccer & football games, her pride in their academic and personal achievements, and the happiness she found in her first great-grandchild, Grayson, filled her later years with meaning.

Joan had a spirited love for life: she travelled whenever she could, filled her home with hummingbirds, shared her days with her mischievous cat. Alongside her late husband, Charlie, she supported greyhound rescue, providing loving homes to the dogs they cared for together. Her humor - blunt, often unexpectedly funny, yet always warm beneath the surface - brought light to the people around her.

Joan is survived by her sons and their wives: Tim and Jeannie, Chris and Danielle, and Spencer and Kate; her grandchildren Rylie, Brynn, and Luke; and her great-grandchild Grayson. She is also survived by the father of her children, Lou Moga. She was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Charles "Charlie" Herner.

A celebration of Joan's life will be held at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Tucson on January 9th, 2026 at 2:00 p.m.
