Brother Bart,
Both through my living memory and through my faith I continue 'seeing' you sending your gifts of the spirit--your acceptance, support, humor, determination. You made, and continuing making, a big difference in my life--honoring my presence as your step-father, reaching out supportively to your mother (Edwina, my wife), loving Brenna, caring about your extended family and your extended circle of friends, actively representing the heart of AA and especially its 12th Step, enjoying pie-rating experiences with me, quietly exhibiting your knowledge of computers and construction, not-so-quietly exhibiting your pro football preferences, dealing with the daily and finally overwhelming demands of your blood cancer and on and on. These gifts of your life and spirit are still making a difference for me. Thank you, Bart, for being you--both then and now.
Gratefully, Lee Scott, Tucson

Happy Birthday Bart. You would be 51 today and I am thankful for the short 50 years you were with us. Things weren't always easy for you, especially the last few years, but you always lived your life in an inspirational way. You faced every challenge head-on and never took the easy way out. I could always count on you to be a straight-shooter. I miss you so much, especially your visits and our long talks. With love from your sis...

I met John via a 'coffee roasters' list. We immediately made a connection and sent many e-mails off list. Unfortunately we lived at opposite sides of Tucson, so getting together wasn't easy. We did manage though and would exchange both green and roasted beans. John gave me great encouragement when I was having my hip replaced - he seemed to have a well of strength to pass along to anyone who needed it. I miss him.

I'm saddened to learn of John's passing. He was a dear friend who I never actually met in person - he was a member of the Sweet Maria's coffee homeroasters' email list. We shared a love of good coffee, and I experienced his simple and honest kindness.
I send my condolences to his family; he will most certainly be missed.

Bart was so smart and so funny. He had made in hysterics constantly. Yes what a dry wit!!!Great smile and really a strong person who never complained about his illness to us. He is loved and missed. He was a regular at St Albans saturday night at the Washington National Cathedral in DC. He was also regular at St Albans Friday night .We went out after each meeting where he was the life of the party! One of my sponsee's kids overdosed and Bart stayed with her all night. He is mourned here in Maryland/DC. I am sad but he lives on in us.He was and is one of God's angels. Many Blessings to his family

I met Bart only once while visiting with my brother, Ed. It was very easy to see why he was such a posive influence on my brother's life and why Ed was so proud to call him "friend". My brother is making an adventurous move to be closer to me and my family and I believe in my heart that his coming in contact with Bart impacted all of our lives. My sincere condolences to all Bart's loved ones and many friends.

Bart was such a significant person in our lives. He was this dry witted, smart guy who really carried the message. I will miss his wise musings on life and off-color jokes. I am sending his family and loved ones well wishes.

Dear Edwina, Lee and family,
I am so sorry to hear of Bart's passing. I have been praying so hard for Bart but it was not God's will. Bart has won the battle as he sits in our Father's house.
Love and continued prayers,

Bart was my best friend, mentor and brother in recovery. He gave me his time, his love -- and his Higher Power -- and a second chance at becoming happily and usefully whole. . . Knowing him was a blessing and a joy. . . On behalf of the Woodmont Group and the Del Ray Club in Bethesda, MD -- "Thanks for Sharing, Bart." . . . Our thoughts and prayers are with Edwina, Kim, Lee, Blake and Brenna.

John has left a huge hole, where he used to walk and talk and tell his ever entertaining stories. I am not sure which was better, watching John tell a known story to a new recipient or hearing a new story and watch him get started...
We love you John! and miss you!
Peace.
