I met Hank at ASU while attending graduate classes. We shared a common interest in Single Point Urban Interchanges, which got us together for discussions. Here he was a grizzled veteran already in the traffic engineering field and I was a graduate student with no experience. He never made me feel that. After school I worked with Hank at ADOT Traffic Studies. He was one of the guys who got me started skiing at the AZ Snowbowl. Hank was always smiling and liked his Penn State football. I saw him last couple of years ago at the ITE spring conference. He was presenting a paper.

It was a shock to hear the news. Hank is in my thoughts.

As I dwelt on Hank's death over the last couple of days, the saying "The good die young " kept coming to mind. The Hank I knew was all goodness .I saw him twice since our family moved to CO thirty years ago. He came to Montrose once and he and Sean went skiing at Crested Butte. Years later we met him and his future wife in Phoenix. Our sympathy goes out to his wife and children and three sisters on this terrible loss.

Hank brought me into ADOT. I still recall his offer to help me move in on my first day on the job; he wasn't kidding about the offer. Hank enjoyed jokes, even if they were his expense. He was always in a good mood and had a wonderful sense of humor. If I had to pick three words to describe him, they would be patience, kindness and intelligence.

My life is better because I knew him. I pray that God bless and console his family.
