Leo Carrillo Obituary

Leo Sotomayor Carrillo On May 29, 2013, Leo Sotomayor Carrillo passed away at St. Joseph's hospital, listening in his final hours to the mariachi music he loved throughout his life. Leo was 86. Born on March 16, 1927, Mr. Carrillo was the son of Federico Chavez Carrillo and Guadalupe Sotomayor. He was born and raised in Barrio Anita. Mr. Carrillo attended Davis Elementary School, Roskruge Middle School and Tucson High School and was an avid baseball player from an early age. He was the bat boy for the Oury Park Tigers, and played first base for Arizona Flowermills. For most of his career, he worked for Tucson District 1 (later Tucson Unified School District) in the custodial and facilities department. Mr. Carrillo supervised the painting of schools throughout the district. In the Army, Mr. Carrillo served in the Corps of Engineers, setting up military bases in Corpus Christi, Texas, Fort Bliss, Texas, Camp Polk, Louisiana and other locations. On December 24, 1950 he married Emma Dominguez Meza. Upon discharge from the service in 1952, Mr. Carrillo returned to his work with the school district and for Tucson Fruit (later Cox Produce), where he painted "La Emma" lovingly on the side of his truck. He retired in 1989. But perhaps what Mr. Carrillo is most remembered for is his dedication to his sons, Randy and Steve's musical pursuits, beginning with the Mariachi Los Changuitos Feos in the 1960s all the way through their founding of Mariachi Cobre and beyond. Mr. Carrillo tirelessly volunteered to chaperone and chauffer the boys of Los Changuitos Feos to a variety of gigs around Arizona, and New Mexico, and with his wife, Emma, and other Changuito parents, was instrumental to the group's success. Mr. Carrillo could often be seen at the Tucson International Mariachi Conference savoring the music whether his sons played or not, and was beaming in Boston's Symphony Hall when Mariachi Cobre made its triumphant debut with the Boston Pops. He loved all of Mexican music, but especially the mariachi. Leo is survived by wife, Emma; son, Randy (Nancy); son, Stephen (Melanie) all of Orlando, FL, five grandchildren, Jennifer and Gregory of Nashville, TN, Stephanie and Emily of Orlando, FL and Celina of San Jose, CA; his fraternal twin, Tillie Gallardo; as well as brothers, Monsignor Arsenio Carrillo, Genaro (Gene), Tony and is predeceased by brother, Frank (Lico), all of Tucson. A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Augustine Cathedral, 192 S. Stone Ave. Arrangements by CARRILLO'S TUCSON MORTUARY.

Randy/Steve,

My belated sympathy on the passing of your father. I know you are still feeling the physical absence of his unconditional love and support for you and your families, but I'm sure you are comforted with the assurance that he is with our LORD and continues to look down on you with a more pure and greater love he now possesses in the presence of God.

I am still coming to grips with this reality. I want you to know how sad I am for you guys and your mom. Grieving is a long process and I don't know if one can stop.
I still grieve for my mom, grampa and others too. I believe that the best way to get through is to keep going, sounds easy, yea, but there are some days that my internal GPS is not working and I am lost. Anyway, know your pop as well as you guys and your mom will always be in my prayers as well the rest of your family. Until then, I am very proud we are the family we are.
Love always, Tony

You were blessed to have such a wonderful and loving person to share in your lives. We enjoyed visiting with him while he was here and will miss him now that he is gone to a better place. I will always remember our many chats sitting on a bench between Mariachi Cobre sets. Thank you, Leo, for being a significant part of our lives.

Dear Emma, Randy, Steve and All the Carrillo family: Deepest condolences on the passing of a truly fine man – a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and brother. At an early age, I learned of primo Leo's great sense of humor when we visited the Carrillo family's home. Leo made our lives better by bringing smiles to our faces with his jokes. He also had a serious side, a devoted work ethic and a deep love for Our Lord. Nothing made Leo happier than listening, with Emma at his side, to Mariachi Cobre and celebrating the success of Randy, Steve and the entire group. Primo Leo, may you rest in peace and continue to enjoy mariachi from heaven.

Emma and Carrillo family, Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Mr Carrillo was always jokingly telling me to remind my mother, Naya Ortiz to pay him what she owed him. I never knew what that was till recently, something about a joke with gum she played on him and some friends when they were young in Barrio Anita. Leo always asked about my family whenever I saw him, and his kind words always were appreciated.

June 3, 2013

To the Carrillo Family,
