Nora STARK Obituary

STARK, Nora Robinson 2/22/1936 - 1/22/2018 Nora Robinson Stark, award-winning substance abuse counselor and artist, died suddenly of cancer on January 22, 2018. She was born in New York City on February 22, 1936. In Nora's early years, her family lived in Tucson and Patagonia, Arizona. She graduated from Miss Porter's School in 1954 and attended Radcliffe College. President Theodore Roosevelt was Nora's great-great-uncle. She worked for a yacht broker in New York City where she met her former husband, Frederic "Fritz" W. Stark II, then moved to London where she worked for the U.S. Air Force. Later she moved to Mallorca, Spain where she resided for many years. In 1981, Nora moved to Arvada, CO, where she was a primary therapist at Cottonwood Hill. In 1988 she returned to Tucson and became program coordinator at Vida Nueva for 16 years. She was a member of a community-based 12 step program for 40 years. Nora loved her wide circle of friends and dogs, feeding the birds in her flower filled garden, resuming painting and taking up fly fishing. A Memorial at Rose Canyon Lake is being planned. Nora is actually in my top 5 best humans I ever met. @2002-2006 I had the pleasure of sharing time with her. She was so stoic. Classy. Wise. Stubborn. We shared love of hummingbirds. She was my person, who I learned so much about trauma, recovery, love, boundaries, self respect. She loved going to her annual trips to Spain with her girlfriends. Lived her dog. Truely cared about the women at Vida Nueva (I was one of them) and sacrificed her time and invested in the well being of people. She taught yoga. She supported those new in recovery, even going to support groups attended by the "lowest of the low." She had a keen sense everyone around her, had discernment. This was 20 years ago, and... I think of her often. She made such a difference in my life. I didn´t know of her cancer or passing. She helped save my life, was a mother, grandmother, mentor, counselor, spiritual advisor and friend. She´s here with us now. What a strong woman I aspire to be like.

I walked my dog in the neighborhood and met Nora walking her dog. She invited me to her home and taught me an art technique she was learning. I just learned of her departure. She is such a blessing to me. She was out and about, loving people and sharing her talent.

Nora's passing will be very hard for all of us she helped. There is no doubt in my mind that she saved my life. Her tough love was exactly what I needed. The years of work she did with me allowed me to change my life. When the student is ready the teacher appears. There are no words to thank someone who has done so much for so many of us! Love you Nora

I just found out about Nora's passing. I'm feeling so much loss right now. I first met her in Mallorca where I was a member of her women's group. She was instrumental in helping me find a new way of life. I will be forever grateful to her. The number of people she was able to help must number in the thousands. She brought hope and serenity to countless people through the selfless work she did throughout her life. I didn't have the privilege of spending time with her the last years of her life, but I will be forever grateful for her. Her presence, her experience, strength, and hope, I will carry with me forever. I have so many special memories of her. Thank you, Nonie!

There are no words to describe the sadness I feel about Nora's passing. She was a best friend to my mother and a mentor and mother/grandmother figure to me. I had the honor of meeting her when my mother worked with her as a LISAC at Vida Nueva for 10 years. She had an incredible influence on all of those people she met and had a zest for life, always staying active and pursuing new hobbies no matter what age.. I will always think of her gracefully diving into our pool and the way her eyes would light up when she'd laugh. Nonie we love you and will miss you forever.

With tremendous respect and love we accept Nora's passing, but miss her terribly already. It was an honor to be with her as she took her last breath. I met Nora 38 yrs ago through her late youngest brother Theodore Douglas Robinson, whom I as many others loved. Our condolences to her remaining siblings and family, as well as those whose lives she helped change.
