My wife Cate and I recently gave talks and ran economics experiments at U of Rochester, as guests of Steven Landsburg (the original Armchair Economist). Patrick was well-remembered by Steve and several others who made a point of coming around to say they were glad we got a chance to work with him.

I am sadden for your loss. I have fond memories of our boys wrestling at the Bellevue Boy and Girls Club when your boys were just little tikes. I didn't see this notice until recently, as I live out of the country. I wish you my heartfelt condolences.

Just found out the sad news. I knew Patrick from the days when we were in the math team in middle school and later on the wrestling team in high school, we shared many classes together. He was a quiet and hard working person, I enjoyed chatting with him since I am a quiet person too. I still remember he was eating his sandwich during lunch time in the classroom, and working on his tricep dips at the same time, that's how he become one of the best wrestlers on the team. He lived life to the fullest and I'll miss him.

I was so sad to recently learn of Patrick's loss. I interacted with him several times in an editorial capacity, having reviewed his work and having solicited his help as a reviewer. I appreciated his creative and unusual papers and the thoughtful comments he gave others. Sending love to his family.

I taught Patrick in a graduate class at the University of Rochester. He was an outstanding student, and frequently corrected the errors I made on the blackboard. He took a careful approach to research, and was an elegant thinker. I will miss him.

May you rest in peace, Patrick.

Patrick and I were in the gifted program together in middle school, and graduated high school together. We hadn't talked since, but I remember him as kind, soft-spoken, diligent, and so intelligent. He was one of the best wrestlers, and true to himself, in a sea of followers. I am so sorry for your loss.

I recall Patrick being a very quiet, interesting, and thoughtful individual when he was growing up. I would have never realized that he would become such a dominant individual in our society. I only wish I could have spent more time with him during his growing years. I'll never forget the time when Patrick his mother, dad, and younger brother came to visit us one summer. We all went up into the mountains around Hines, Ore. for a picnic outing. The two boys, Patrick and Andrew were both very young at the time and spent the day playing in the creek and mud. When we all headed home I remember Karen saying she had never seen the boys get so dirty and worn out. They had a ball but mother was not happy about the dirty condition of the boys. Who would have thought that Patrick would become a world -renowned leader in the field of economics. Patrick will be missed by all who knew him. Karen and Dale you raised a very special person...Love from our hearts Uncle Mick and aunt Nancy.

As an undergraduate at Arizona State University, Patrick was my student. He was brilliant, had an irreverent sense of humor, and was inspirational. Patrick took economics to a new level and took his teacher along with him. I´m attaching a photograph of six of my very bright economics tutors during their senior year. You will know the red headed lad on the right. They called themselves the "Armchair Economists;" a nod to Steven Landsburg.

The celebration of Patrick´s life today gave Dale, Karen, and Andrew an inkling of just how many lives he touched. I am heartbroken that he is gone but grateful that he was in my life for 20 years.

Just thinking random thoughts today. Here is another one. A team of us went down to Torreon, Mexico, to talk about the ethics and economics of citizenship in a commercial society. We did a radio show, a television interview, met with local businesspeople...

We taught a couple of classes at a local high school, to a couple of English language classes, with Patrick taking the lead. Patrick was, of course, really good, as always: confident, intense, but friendly, patient, and clear. Afterwards we went out to a local restaurant. We sat down. We never ordered anything. They just started bringing us food. The owner came around and said, this is my house, and this is my way of saying thank you for what you are doing for our children. Anything you want is on the house.

FWIW, the food was spectacular and Patrick ate more than I've ever seen him eat before (and vice versa, I'm sure). For whatever reason, Torreon felt like him to us all. That's probably my favorite memory of Patrick.

I met Mr. Harless in 2007 when I started my middle school education at Fay. He was my dorm parent, wrestling and baseball coach, math teacher, and advisor. To all of his advisees, including myself, Kenny Chan, Jun Yabuki, and John Henry Fitzgerald at the time, he was sincerely warm and caring. He went out of his way to welcome and invite us to his apartment for dinners and drive us to the malls to treat us with delicious food and share wisdom with us.

As a coach, Mr. Harless was passionate, inspiring, and motivating. My last year at Fay, with Mr. Harless as our head wrestling coach, we went undefeated and won the big Fessenden Tournament. Even though I was not a key athlete for the team, the bond that Mr. Harless and the rest of the team created, the sweat and hard work we put in, the fun memories of practice, matches, and tournaments all moved my heart and this tremendously happy and warm tears were falling from my eyes as our captain Jeffrey Chen secured our win. Mr. Harless always lead by example by running, doing all the drills with us, and sweating even more than us during practices. I still feel and remember him so dearly.

As a math teacher, Mr. Harless was very effective in teaching us young students. He was incredibly organized and even as a young child, we could tell he is very smart. He taught us in the most comprehensive and easy to understand ways. He would always be there to answer any questions and give us feedback with our work.

As an advisor, Mr. Harless´ classroom would be our safe zone, like a warm home we could always go back to. He was always incredibly generous with his care.

I remember so vividly when Mr. Harless was invited by the Korean students´ families, as he was so beloved by us, to visit Korea. He stayed at my house with my family, and as a young child I had the pleasure to share the beauties of my country with my lovely teacher.

Even when I moved on to high school, Mr. Harless would send me hand-written letters. I have never met a teacher as loving and caring as him. I am truly grateful to have met him, shared wonderful memories with him, and to have grown up and live with his love, warmth, and kindness.

I share sincere condolences with Mr. Harless´ family and everyone he has known.

I'd like to express my gratitude for Patrick's many contributions to the University of Glasgow, in Economics at the Adam Smith Business School. Even at a relatively early stage in his career, Patrick had established himself with an outstanding reputation in micro theory. I was equally impressed with his contribution to our learning and teaching at all levels of study and his dedication to our students.

It is a privilege to have had Patrick as a PhD Student. Patrick was exceptional in every way, initially by the quality of his answers to homework questions, and later by the originality and depth of his research; by the quality of his teaching and his gift in communicating his excitement about economics.

But Patrick was more than a brilliant student,
more than a rigorous, imaginative, and unusually productive researcher who already had several published papers to his name when he entered the job market, and more than a dream referee, whose reports always ran several pages of detailed and useful comments.

Patrick was a kind and supportive classmate.
He was an extraordinary helpful and generous friend.
He was an amazingly dedicated teacher.

Technically, Patrick was a student of mine but in fact he was an extraordinary colleague. On two occasions, he gave me incredibly thoughtful comments on every single page of a book manuscript.
He had also sent me several pages of comments on a preliminary text and I was just about to email him a revised version when he passed away.

In spite of his multiple talents, Patrick was humble, respectful, and sometimes shy. Yet, he had convictions and he could be passionate in defending a viewpoint. It could be about punctuation, a choice of notation, a point of language, the significance of a concept, or the importance of a result.

We won't have Patrick anymore, and that's terribly sad.

But his legacy will remain
in his passion for teaching,
in his enthusiasm for the quest for knowledge that he communicated to so many young people,
in his generosity to everyone he met,
in the example that he set.
He will remain a source of inspiration for all of us.

I will miss dearly.

I was Patrick's colleague at the University of Arizona Freedom Center. Patrick was an outstanding teacher and a Scholar, with a capital S. He also belonged to that rare breed of academics who is genuinely interested in others' research. Last October, he was kind enough to surprise me with his participation to an online presentation of mine, providing generous feedback and comments on my work. We all miss him dearly at the Freedom Center. May you rest in peace Patrick.

I worked with Patrick at the University of Arizona. Patrick and I spent many hours in the car on our way to visit high schools up in Phoenix. At each school, he had a new lesson planned to help the teacher. Patrick was passionate about teaching and I respected his knowledge and experience. In addition to working with me on the high school material, Patrick taught a game theory class to a group of high school teachers over the summer. Generally speaking, high school teachers are a tough audience but Patrick had people talking in the hallways and during breaks about how awesome he was at teaching. Patrick will live on through his students, young and old.

On the 2016 job market for fresh Economics PhD, Patrick was an outstanding catch for the microeconomic theory group of the Adam Smith Business School at the University of Glasgow. His training at the University of Rochester followed an intellectual route very similar to our own trajectory, and indeed we had already communicated with him about his research findings and papers.
In our group he was instantly recognised for his scholarly talent, and in the much larger AS Business School for his congeniality, deep dedication to teaching our undergraduate students, and generous advising of our graduate students. And by all for his modesty and deadpan humour.
Anna and I were also lucky to enjoy his company up close, when he stayed at our home for his first month finding his way in Glasgow, and also later when he was about to return to the US.
Dear Dale and Karen, we lost a great colleague but mostly a dear friend who felt sometimes like a young member of our family.
Our most sincere condolences.

Right from the first few times I met Patrick, two things stuck out about him: his creativity and his depth of thought. I had already left Rochester when he started his grad school there, but I visited from time to time. It didn’t take many interactions with him to be impressed. In 2014, I had hit a wall with one of my research projects and decided to get someone with a fresh perspective to work with me. Patrick was a natural choice. I sent him what I had and in a short while he saw right through it. We ended up publishing a paper not long after. I’m so glad that I asked Patrick to work with me: sure, we wrote a really nice paper, but more importantly, I got to know Patrick. Underneath all of his quirks, Patrick’s generosity, thoughtfulness, and kindness defined him. I am grateful to have called him my friend.

I met Patrick when he came to Málaga (Spain) to give a seminar at my University. At that time, I was planning to move to University of Rochester for a research stay during my PhD studies, so hearing from his experience there was extremely helpful. Once there, Patrick was visiting Prof. William Thomson for some weeks and it was then that I had the great opportunity to tell Patrick about my research. He was extremely kind and generous in listening to me and giving me feedback about my work. Patrick took the time of doing an impressively deep report on it. Those were extremely valuable comments that definitely allowed me to move on with my project. It was such a completely selfless help at the earliest stage of my academic career that a word of gratitude to Patrick will be always found on me. Patrick, the memory of you will always be in our hearts.

I met Patrick at PROMYS for Teachers in the summer of 2011. Like everyone has said, he was the kindest teacher. The next summer, he taught there and our friendship grew.

Before he left for his PhD program, I convinced him to go on a segway tour of Boston. It was an afternoon whipping through City Hall Plaza and walking through the North End.

Every so often I'd write to him about my goings-on. He was always sweet, witty and funny.

I will miss you dear Patrick. Your friendship provided me comfort in some challenging times.

We had the enjoyment of having lunch with Patrick in Glasgow. During that time we asked him why he moved his interest and energies from Mathematics to Economics. His answer: Economics allows me to tell a story with Mathematics. We suspect he was known for such succinct and insightful answers. It is clear his work was noteworthy and valued. It is sad that his future work will not be realized which is a loss for the world of Economics. He was a gentle, kind, and good soul who will be missed.

Dale,

I just came across this very sad news while looking through the paper this morning and I just want to say that my heart goes out to you and your family. My you find peace and strength through the wonderful memories of your son, who although I never met him I can tell you from these beautiful tributes that he was an outstanding person. God Bless.

Mr. Harless... He was not just a teacher, but an older brother, a great uncle, and the best friend for so many of us who graduated from Fay. I had him as my geometry teacher for one year. He did not just grade my paper. He would tell me, "Chloe, you did not put your best here." I would then go on and on with him about what is bothering me that week. He knew his students so well. Mr. Harless is the one who told me that if I try hard in math, I will be pretty good at it. I now graduated college with a major in math. There were so many exclamation points in the card he sent me after the news (pretty rare for Mr. Harless). When I moved to high school from Fay, his card was the first card I ever received in that school. In the hand written note, he wished me best. We had few card exchanges after that. He never ran out of touch. I was unbelievaly touched to have a soul in this country who cares for me that much. He gave me courage to stay in the states. I feel this way, although I just took him for one year, and I was not related to wrestling at all. Rest in peace Mr Harless. World was great because you were here. You deserve the best piece of heaven.

Coach Harless was a great mentor to me during my time with the Fay wrestling team because he always led by example. He was never as vocal or aggressive as some of the other coaches, but he was a beast on the mat! I am humbled to have had the chance to meet a mentor like Coach Harless.

My deepest condolences to Coach Harless´s family and loved ones.

I met Patrick when I was visiting graduate student at Rochester. We were both attending William's classes and were part of the larger group of William's students. We spent many hours together that year. Patrick was deeply sincere and kind. After this we met at several occasions like conferences and at universities. We spent a long and slightly chilly day in Bonn the winter of 2016. He came to Bonn to give a jobtalk and we spent there day exploring the city together.

He left us way too early.

I was Patrick's Teaching Assistant in the Fall 2020 semester, and I realized right away how much he cared about teaching. He put a lot of time, energy, and research into his classes and I learned a lot by observing Patrick's use of creative and novel instruction techniques. His passing is a great loss to future students.

Patrick and I developed the first curriculum for Game Theory at CTY Princeton in 2013. He was such a talented scholar and devoted educator. As his colleague, I truly appreciate his effective teaching strategies and innovative pedagogical approaches. Though working with different concentrations and methodologies, Patrick and I share many similar research interests. He helped me formulate some of my earlier book ideas, and I wish I could have completed the book and shared it with him for his feedback. His passing is a great loss. You will be missed, Patrick!

I knew Patrick only briefly, when he came for a job talk at UQ, but it was very easy to sense that he was a talented scholar with a deep and sincere interest in research, as well as an unfailingly kind and gentle soul. I grateful that I had that chance to get to know him, if only a little bit. May he rest in peace.

I met Patrick Harless at a conference during the summer in 2015. He was a very nice, kind and smart person. Because his work was closely related to some early work, I read some of his papers very closely. He was a very creative researcher. On several occasions, I was asked to referee his work. One of these ended up being the longest report I ever wrote in my entire career.

January 11, 2021

When I learned about his passing, I had been thinking about a research question Patrick and I shared. Perhaps Patrick did not know but I discovered, reading a paper of his, that we were going after the same thing. I hoped to get in touch with him once I make some progress. But then the news arrived, much too early.

Patrick and I met in Rochester where we did our PhDs. While there, we talked a lot about various things including research and there was always something I could learn from him. It is a great loss that the world will no longer have that opportunity. Rest in peach.

January 11, 2021

I knew Patrick as an innovative and thoughtful math teacher who was committed to engaging his students in creating and studying their own mathematical objects. An enthusiastic user of The Geometer's Sketchpad, he corresponded with us about both the design of our software and the pedagogy underlying the Sketchpad activities we created for students. He contributed a fascinating article to The Mathematics Teacher journal (V104 #6) and helped to edit the journal's "Activities for Students" feature.
I had the good fortune of meeting Patrick in person at several regional and national math-teacher conferences where we each attended the other's presentations, and I valued his constructive feedback.
Though Patrick's career as a math teachers was relatively short, his contributions to his students, to his colleagues, and to the field of math education were significant. We've lost a caring, thoughtful, committed human being. My sympathy to his family and many friends.

From 2013 to 2018, Patrick taught game theory courses for the Johns Hopkins University for Talented Youth, and after a short break, he returned for the summer of 2020 to help us launch a new virtual program, CTY L.I.V.E., for which he created an entirely new course, How Do We Choose?, from scratch. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Patrick, we corresponded over the years regarding his work for CTY. He loved having the opportunity to develop How Do We Choose?, and his words of encouragement to me and my colleagues as we worked to get CTY L.I.V.E. up and running gave us all a reason to hope. Patrick changed students' lives at CTY, and we were blessed to have him be a part of the CTY family. We will not forget him.

I was tangentially involved in recruiting Patrick at Glasgow. He spoke slowly and carefully; he seemed to be a person who thinks before he speaks---we need more of them. As our research focuses differed we had few encounters in Glasgow, but I attended one of his presentations at a recent conference in Italy. I was impressed with the clarity and meticulousness of his talk. His passing is a loss.

Mr. Harless was my advisor and wrestling coach during my four years at Fay.

As a student coming from a different part of the world, I remember being overwhelmed and nervous during the first few weeks at the school. However, he immediately took me under his wings to make sure that I was fitting in to the new environment and looked after my well-being.

Through countless trips to wrestling tournaments throughout New England in the harsh weather to occasional dine out at CheeseCake Factory (of course with his favorite Diet Coke) to stopping by at his apartment to talk about life, we grew a bond that would last a lifetime.

Though we did not have an opportunity to meet in the past couple of years, we always kept in touch and updated each other on our lives. During our last conversation, he told me he was moving back to Arizona and how special for him to hear about the successes and new adventures in my life. I will cherish and be forever thankful for the relationship I had with Mr. Harless.

His lifestyle, sense of work ethic and positive attitudes toward life had a profound impact to who I am today and Mr. Harless will always be my role model that I look up to.

I send my condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace Mr. Harless

Patrick and I had worked together at the Johns Hopkins CTY´s summer site at Princeton University from 2013 to 2016. He did not talk much and was known to be an extremely intelligent and caring teacher. I remember he used to carry some books with him that were always interesting for me. I used to tell him that someday I´ll sit and discuss the subject matter with him and he always said: yes Ali, sure. Unfortunately, I never got the time to sit with him and discuss. Those days will never return and the memories of Princeton University are now inextricably linked to the memories of his smiling face and caring voice.

He was a math teacher, and I was an English teacher, and we coached wrestling together for a few years at Fay School in MA. I was the head coach. Patrick was quiet, but after a while, I asked him to teach his signature move, the barbed wire. It was a technique I never did and couldn't teach, but one I respected. He showed it to the kids twice, explaining each detail as he went, and he executed and explained it perfectly. When he got done, the kids were quiet for a second and then they burst into applause, which is rare when a wrestling coach shows a move. But it was the first time that Patrick had taken the lead, and the kids wanted him to know they appreciated it. Our kids went on to pin a lot of opponents with the barbed wire that season. As we got to know each other, he and I would wrestle each other after practice for fun. Wrestling partners makes for a special bond. When I left, he took the program over and did an awesome job teaching, training, and mentoring. He really found his voice as the coach of Fay Wrestling. RIP Patrick.

I met Patrick in the summer of 2014, in one of my frequent visits to what I like to call the "William Thomson School" at Rochester. Back then, he was starting to work on his PhD thesis and William had already told me how brilliant this new student was. It took me just a conversation with him to confirm that and I became fascinated by his depth of knowledge, as well as his exquisite manners.
I was excited to know that he was moving to this side of the Atlantic, once he graduated. I organized a visit for him to Southern Spain just a few months after arriving to Glasgow. He gave a talk at my current department (in Seville) and the previous one (in Malaga). He gave an outstanding seminar (as usual) and we had fun while here. We met in some conferences after that, where I was always eager to hear about his new research projects and we were also in touch once he returned to the US.
He was an extremely generous scholar. As an editor, I have found very few referees performing like he did. He was always extraordinary in that task, delivering timely and superb reports each time I requested his help.
He left us way too soon. He will be largely missed.

I was Patrick's colleague at the University of Glasgow. I met him at our university café for the first time and remember how enthusiastic he was to get involved in teaching a new course we were starting that year. He was a very conscientious and talented teacher, up for any challenge. It is indeed such a shock to hear of this great loss. Patrick has been a valued colleague who has achieved a lot and positively impacted so many young people. I pray that Patrick rests in peace eternally and my deepest condolences to his family and friends.

I worked with Patrick this summer at CTY and had the great joy of spending many hours visiting his class. Patrick personified an amazing blend of an incredible intellect and a gentle soul. Even the most reticent students felt part of the community--no small feat given the combination of a new course, remote learning, and some very anxious students. I will miss Patrick greatly and am just happy I had the opportunity to meet him and learn from him. My sincerest condolences.

Patrick and I were colleagues at the Fay School in Southborough, MA. As his Department Chair, I would often come to school early in the morning, knowing I would find Patrick carefully grading his students' homework papers or coming up with a new idea for presenting a lesson. He would always have something interesting to share.

Fifteen years later my teaching is still being influenced by Patrick's brilliant and original ideas about how best to engage students in the study of algebra and geometry.

Patrick was a brilliant, committed and humble educator. He was a great human being.

I am terribly sad about his passing. I will miss him.

Sad to see my nephew leave this earth so young but it's great to see that he was a great student and teacher.

I know him only by his smile which the world will surely miss.

I met Patrick when he was about 10 months old and I was 11. He was the very first kid I babysat for and therefore my most favorite.
I spent many afternoons hanging out with Karen and Patrick in their home on Allen Avenue. Soon after Andrew arrived they moved back to Seattle. I remember sitting on the curb waiting for them to come out of their house to begin their journey.
In 1985 I visited them in Bellevue for a week. I just loved those boys.
Through the many years, I´ve kept in touch with Karen and Dale.
I am beyond saddened by the loss of Patrick.
Two things I´ll never forget from that Halloween day in 1981. Patrick walking in to my house and saying, Mara, where did you put your mother and then after walking through the house and touching everything, Patrick picked up is pumpkin and said "done"
May G_d rest your precious soul Patrick. You will forever be that sweet little clown.
Love always,
Mara

I'm very sorry to have just heard this. Patrick supervised a game theory reading group in which I participated my last year as a PhD student at the University of Arizona. He was always kind, patient, and generous with his time, as well as extremely knowledgeable. My condolences to his family and loved ones. Sincerely, Adam Gjesdal

It's with great sadness that I just received the following email post. As a Fay teacher, coach, colleague and friend, Patrick was a highly talented, deeply dedicated, wonderfully warm-hearted individual, who placed an indelible positive imprint on his students and wrestlers. I send my deep condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
