Richard "Dick" C. Nobile Obituary

Richard “Dick” C. Nobile (Coach), 90, of Cromwell, beloved husband of Brenda (Erlacher) Nobile, passed away Sunday July 21, 2024, at UMASS Medical Center, Worcester, MA.

He was born on June 10, 1934 in Hartford, CT, the eldest son of the late Carmine C. and Anna (Coniglione) Nobile. Richard grew up in Hartford and attended Weaver High School, where he was a football and track standout. He attended the University of Hartford before enlisting in the US Army in November 1953 during the Korean War. After his military service, he opened his salon in Wethersfield, followed by another in Middletown, before transitioning to real estate. Dick’s many interests included, horse racing, sports, the beach, and spending time with his family. One of his favorite places was his beach house in Clinton, CT, where he had an “open door” policy for family and friends to gather during the summer. His other favorite places were Hollywood, FL, Cromwell, CT and any football field.

Dick was involved in several town committees including the Economic Development Commission, Parks and Recreation Department, The Riverport Fest, and was a founding member of the Cromwell Athletic Club. Dick was named Cromwell Man of the Year in 2007 for his more than 30 years of dedication to the youth and community of Cromwell.

Dick’s passion in life was youth sports. Upon moving to Cromwell in 1971, he quickly jumped into coaching several teams, including, Cromwell Little League, Park and Rec Basketball, and Cromwell Lions Midget Football, where he coached the team to double digit state championships and was appointed the President of the Eastern Connecticut Football Conference. Along with coaching, Dick also created Cromwell Junior Pro Basketball.

2005 was a pivotal year in Dick’s coaching career when he joined Coach Sean Marinan, and the Xavier Falcons Football Program as Associate Head Coach.  During his tenure, he coached every position on the field and was a mentor to all, including coaches. Over the next 18 years Dick was an integral part of Xavier’s 5 State Championships, 3 of which were undefeated seasons, and 5 SCC Conference Championships. Coach Nobile had the gift of recognizing talent. For Dick, football was a microcosm of life and he loved his players and instilled in them the belief that they could do great things. His dedication and love for Xavier football was extraordinary and he made a lasting impression on everyone who came through the program.

In addition to his wife of 43 years, he is survived by his sons, Thomas (Alice) Nobile of Old Saybrook, CT, Dale (Amy) Nobile of Vero Beach, FL, Robert (Samantha) Nobile of Highlands Ranch, CO, daughter, Dayna (Shawn) Nobile-Munz of West Dover, VT; brother, Thomas (Lucy) Nobile of Westbrook, CT; sister, Marie (Wendell) Gayson, of Escondido, CA; thirteen grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Thursday (July 25th)  from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM followed by a short service at 6:30 PM at Xavier High School, 181 Randolph Rd., Middletown, CT.  A private burial, with military honors at the State Veterans’ Cemetery will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may send memorial contributions to Xavier High School. To share memories or express condolences online please visit www.biegafuneralhome.com.

Brenda and family,
My condolences go out to you.
I didn't know about Rich's passing until this week. We were at a wedding when someone told me.
I bought the Pink Patio from Richard many years ago. I always thought of him as my mentor and friend. I was very saddened to hear about his passing.
Take care and cherish all the memories you had together.

To The Nobile Family,

So sorry to hear about the passing of Dick "Coach Nobile", please accept my deepest condolences. I coached with Dick for ten years when he was the Commissioner & "A" Team Head Coach of the Cromwell Lions Youth Football League. Coach Nobile was one of a kind who had a great personality, tremendous inside and knowledge of the game, also a great coach and mentor for players and coaches, resulting in many Championships. We continued to have many good experiences throughout the years.

Rest in Peace Dick

To Dale, Rob (Semper Fi) and the entire Nobile family, my deepest condolences. "Mr. Nobile" or "Coach" always had a smile, kind word, joke, memory, words of encouragement, and fondness for all the Cromwell kids he had coached. Whenever I saw him throughout "life after Cromwell", he would give me a sturdy handshake or a quick hug and start telling me what he last heard about me and wanted to brought up to date right then and there. Then he would update me about his kids and grandkids and how proud he was of you all! If time permitted, he would start with "remember that play you made against Portland when you did this/that"....mind you that was 40 plus years ago! He was a true mentor, role model, and one of the greatest fans of all the Cromwell kids in sports and in life. Well Coach, now you can sit in the VIP box and celebrate the lives of all those you impacted so dearly. Thank you and God speed.

I had the privilege of playing youth baseball and football for Coach Nobile, who was an exceptional coach and an even better person. He genuinely cared about his players and always made us feel valued. Coach Nobile was tough and demanded your best, but he did so in an inspirational and positive manner, with a smile that made you want to push harder.

I vividly remember a Little League game where I hit the ball to the fence and, instead of hustling down the baseline, I watched it, thinking it was going over. It didn’t, and I ended up only making it to first base. Coach Nobile really laid into me for that, yelling across the field, “You hit the ball to the fence and are only on first base! Are you kidding me?!” That moment still makes me laugh to this day.

Coach Nobile's joy for coaching youth was evident, and his passion left a lasting impression on me. Of all the coaches I had growing up, he stood out as one of my favorites. He had a unique ability to make each player feel special and capable. I will always remember him as a great man who served his community with dedication and care. We should all aspire to live life as he did, with commitment and a passion for making a difference.

My condolences to the Nobile family.

I started playing midget football in Cromwell close to 50 years ago and I can still smell Coach Nobile's pipe as he called plays in the huddle - one of my favorite childhood memories. He was truly a great coach and a great man and will be missed. Rest in peace Coach Nobile.

My condolences to Trent, Dean, Tom and the Nobile family. Coach Nobes was so important to Xavier football and genuinely cared about his players. In some of my toughest times he was constantly checking in and making sure I was still doing my best on and off the field - and I know for a fact he did the very same for others in similar circumstances. I wish I could have thanked him again and helped load up his el Camino one more time

My deepest sympathies go out to you at this difficult time. Dick and Cover Girl was our neighbor in Riverview Center from 1978-1992 (Alfa Studio). Dick was a great guy and often offered us business tips. Co-incidentally, my brother Alan Goldstein, the photographer at Alfa Studio, passed away on Monday night. Perhaps Al and Dick are discussing the vig,

Brenda, Dayna & the boys(as Dick would say), my condolences on Dick's passing. We spoke a few weeks ago & had a great long talk about our years together at Century 21. Dick was a class act & just a great guy. He could talk about anything, especially the Yankees, Xavier football & so much more. He would always say, "we had a good run", well Dick, you sure did. You will be missed. Rest In Peace, my friend.
