Ronald MARKS Obituary

MARKS, Dr. Ronald L. died May 2, 2017 at the age of 82 in Tucson, AZ. He was born in Avis, PA to William and Miriam (Strunk) Marks. Ron was the youngest of two older brothers, Bruce of Tucson and William Jr., deceased, of Jersey Shore, PA. Ron was married June 10, 1956 to Carol L. Cook of Dale, PA. Their happiness together began at the 1952 Thanksgiving Dance at Lock Have State Teachers College where they were both members of the freshman class. Ron and Carol were blessed with three wonderful daughters, Linda who predeceased her parents in 2010, Mona Croy of Aurora, OH and Sara McCarthy of Ashburn, VA. The three daughters provided their parents with five grandchildren, all of whom, according to their Grandpa could run faster, jump higher and spelled more words than any other child in the world. Ron and Carol began their careers as educators in Bradford, PA., Ron in chemistry and Carol in elementary education. Ron furthered his chemistry education at The Pennsylvania State University (M.ED., Ed.D.), Bucknell University, and Brown University. He loved teaching his students the subject of chemistry in the classroom and in the laboratory. Ron taught two years at Bradford, Pa High School, 28 years at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and nine years at the University of Arizona. He has published in both chemistry education and inorganic chemistry. Amongst his several awards was a Faculty Teaching Chair from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1978. Since his retirement in 1996, Ron and Carol have travelled and fished extensively; but, their love of family was always most important. A lifelong Lutheran, Ron was a member of the Tanque Verde Lutheran Church where a Memorial Service will be held on Monday, May 8, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOME, Dodge Chapel.

To those of us who were fortunate to be in his classes (General Chemistry in 1967 and Inorganic Chemistry in 1969 at IUP for me) he passed on a sense of wonder and magic to the study of science. Sorry to hear of his passing.

Dear Mrs Marks, Mona and Sara,
So sorry to learn of Dr. Marks' passing. What a wonderful human being who was admired, respected and loved by so many. I remember IUP students praising his amazing teaching style and how much they learned from him. I was so proud to be a friend of Mona's and felt honored that I knew him. You are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Carol and Family,
My family and I wish to express our deepest sympathies for Dr. Mark's passing. Ashok and I were students of his at IUP and we considered him a dear friend as well. As I told you, he made a profound, positive influence in my life. There were so many times when he said something inspiring, supportive and encouraging to me. Those were words which I will never forget. Few people touch us in our lives that way. Dr. Marks was definitely one of those people. Please know that you have our love and support.

Aunt Carol,

So sorry I could not make the service for Uncle Ronnie. I heard it was very nice.

My prayers are with you and your family during this sad time. But as time passes I'm sure you will hear his voice in your heart and it will make you smile time and time again. But for now, God will be with you and carry you thru.

Love you,

Pat and Art Mangels
