The Spirit of Roy Metcalfe races on! Marcus raced the "Metcalf Special" in Akron this past month in the "Ultimate Speed" category and placed 4th out of 22 entrants! We were just hoping to place in the top 10. I have to believe that Roy had a hand in helping the car go fast and straight down the hill! A big thanks to Phil Schultz and John Wargo for helping us memorialize Roy at the All-American Soap Box Derby this year!

I know this might sound really strange from a kid who is fifteen, but i was really close to Roy. I met him when i was ten years old at the soap box derby races. From the moment i met him i felt the connection. I knew that we would be really good friends. We have traveled all across the country racing in many different states and i can tell you that Roy was the nicest and smartest man you could have met. I had spent the last four or five years with him and grew really close to him. He was like my dad and best friend at the same time. I know i will miss him.

I met Roy back in the Jim Borst days and qucikly realized he was a great guy. Straight and honest he was. I remember Roy running some repairs out of his old house..haha!! he had a VW motor in the kitchen one time! Soon he became too popular of a mechanic to work out of his house anymore so he got his own shop. I sent as many folks as I could to see Roy and his crew. Sometimes a guy would just want to drop in and BS awhile or get counseled by Roy in his office .. He always had an ear for you and some advice.
It was just good to talk to you Roy. I'm deeply saddened by you leaving my friend, I will miss you.

Roy played a large part in my life and one of the few that I would consider a life long friend. My first ride in a truly quick car, my brother introduced me to Roy in 1969 when I was fifteen and He gave me a ride in his Corvette, I was looking for the seat belts when he stood on it and my arms were stuck behind the seat from the G force. I will never forget that ride.
Roy mentored me as a mechanic and got me hooked on Volvos. Taught me how to water ski and about speed boats, we camped, skied, hunted, fished and helped each other with projects. Roy was always there when I needed a friend and always went the extra distance to make sure that his friends were taken care of.
Roy, you were one hell of a gear head and good friend to me and my family.

My family has known Roy and his family for a long time (mid-60's) and tho I did not meet him personally until I returned to the States after a lengthy assignment overseas and got my car in July 1992 (an '84 Volvo with 97,000 miles on it), everyone said that he would take good care of my car. Even the people in my office referred me to Roy, as he had an excellent reputation as a Volvo "expert". And that he was -- an expert. And a professional. He and his men at his garage never tried to talk me into anything that my car didn't truly need (and being single that meant the world to me) and that's why I'm still driving it with 181,000 miles on it now!! My heart and that of my family goes out to all of Roy's family. He will be missed -- A LOT!! It's always so tragic when someone so young gets taken so suddenly and he will be in my prayers. I'm sure Heaven will benefit from his expertise in all areas great and small. I just know he'll be racing around and having a grand time up there. God Bless.

One can only say "Roy was a great friend" Roy could always be counted on to Be There for everyone. The most important thing that Roy said to me - the last time I saw hm was "we can always count on each other" Roys last words were - something I will always remember "Jay you have always been there for me and I feel you are one of my closest friends, someone I can always count on"
I am sure Roy is watching that we all should follow Roy's Golden Rule.

My family and I will remember Roy as an honest, hard-working man who followed God's Golden Rule both as a businessman and as an individual. I knew Roy over 20 years and many vehicles. He helped me many times. I trusted Roy, and he trusted me as I represented him buying his home on 35th Street. We will remember you, Roy. God Bless You and your family.

Roy was a good friend to me and especially my little brother. My memories of Roy will be ones in which he was advising me on the paths that I had chosen for myself and the impacts they could have on my future as well as my family. I always took his kind words into consideration before making final decisions and honestly believed he understood my situation. I will miss our lengthy conversations about all types and walks of life. Roy was someone I considered a good friend and will be missed.

"It's a small small world" was what Roy wrote on our wedding picture mat 5 years ago. Roy, or "uncle Roy" to us, was such a large part of mine and my wife's family many years before I ever met my wife. To have him share in a bonding of two lives and two families was such an honor as Roy was always "family" to both the Paltrows and the Hollys. Although we all met Roy through his gift of mechanicship, it was not just a matter of taking a car in for repairs, it was a chance to enter his ever so warm world and share in a smile, spirit and sense of humor that could make you forget about any thing else at least for that moment. It was such an honor and lucky blessing for all of us to have Roy as a friend and to be able to share part of our world with him and have him forever share in our lives and spirit. We're smiling up at you Roy as I know you're smiling down on all of us. Our wedding day would not have been the same with out you there. It indeed is a small, small world.
One can only speak sentences in this guest book, however, their are volumes to be spoken in our hearts. There will only ever be one "Roy"!
To Roy's family we wish only peace and blessings for all of you.

We are saddened to learn of the untimely death of a great friend and mechanic. We looked forward to his visits to his summer home in Alpine where we also have a home. His wry sense of humor was very much appreciated and we will miss him.

I offer my sincere condolences to the Metcalfe family, I am sad to hear of Roy's death, I claimed "Metcalfe's Garage" as "my mechanic". I first came to "Metcalfe's" years ago on referral from Phil Schutz at ABC Electric. A referral from Phil was a stamp of compentency/integrity/trust. I meant Roy and his mechanics and was immediately impressed. Roy took the time to talk with me throughout the years about my various mechanical problems. He always gave me a fair assessment of the problem and helped me prioritize to save money. He was always personable and friendly with a hint of humor. I trusted Roy's skills and judgements without question. I always referred others to "Metcalf's", because of Roy. May God bless you Roy for being so good to others.

I first met Roy, and Cindy, in 1971. When he started driving long hauls we rarely saw him, and about that time I moved away for 12 years. When I saw him again it was as if no time had passed, some friendships are like that, he was still the same Roy. He was, and will always be remembered as, a wonderful friend and a man with integrity, humor and a great smile. My heartfelt sympathies to his family, and to his many, many friends.

I am so shocked and sorry to hear about Roy. He was the mechanic on my car when I came to Tucson in 1983 and he worked for Borst Automotive. I then followed him to his own place of business and stayed in touch until he retired. Such a good and honest man and never ever treated a lady as if she didn't know what she wanted and never tried to tell me I needed something I didn't. My condolences to his family and I know the race track in heaven just got some major competition!

Roy was more than friend, he was family. Our kids called him "Uncle Roy". If there is a heaven for those who gave of themselves without expecting reward or payback, our "Uncle Roy" is there! I hope he will be looking down and smiling when the "Metcalfe Special" rolls down the Akron Hill next Summer.
