Ruby Matejka Obituary

Ruby Read Matejka 1926 - 2014 Born in Dallas, TX on November 20, 1926, Ruby was lovingly taken to be with her Savior on May 7, 2014. Pre-deceased by parents, Franklin K. Matejka and Ruby Lillian Neal. Survived by her brother, Frank Neal, San Antonio, TX. Ruby grew up in Brownsville, TX where she excelled academically and as an avid tennis player. She was always a devout Christian. As an adult, she was director of the Carver Baptist Center in New Orleans. After moving to Tucson, she helped many in the Tucson Chinese Baptist community learn English. Moving to Tucson in May 1956, Ruby was a teacher of mathematics at Pueblo High Scholl and served as the boys' tennis coach. She later became head of Pueblo's math department. She then moved on to be president of the Tucson Education Association in 1974. As the K-12 coordinator of Mathematics for TUSD during the 1970's and 1980's, her organizational skills, diligent work ethic and commanding sense of humor endeared her to many TUSD teachers and administrators. Ruby worked in the TUSD research department where her analytical mind was valued. She ended her TUSD career as she began, teaching math at Pueblo High School. Because of her boundless energy, Ruby excelled in all these demanding jobs. Even while working full time for TUSD, Ruby was Director of Music for the Casas Adobes Baptist Church. Upon retirement, as a sports enthusiast, Ruby enjoyed attending and analyzing UofA basketball and baseball games, as well as the Tucson Toros' games. She was an avid birder and photographer with a special affinity toward hummingbirds. Ruby was known as a caregiver to many, including her aunt and uncle with whom she lived while in high school; missionary companions, Mary Etheredge, Nina Gillispie and other friends. Heartfelt thanks to the caring people at Summerset Acres where Ruby lived for the past two years. Special thanks to her many special friends and caregivers for Ruby during her time of need. A Celebration of Ruby's life is planned for 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 22, 2014 at FUNERARIA DEL ANGEL, 7 E. University Blvd., Tucson. In lieu of flowers, Ruby requested memorial gifts to American Bible Society, 1865 Broadway, New York, NY 10023; http://www.americanbible.org or to the Arizona Nature Conservancy, 1510 E. Ft. I remember Ruby well while a student at Pueblo High School. I didn't have the pleasure of being her student; however I remember her as a cheerful smiling lady that I saw occasionally.

I wass saddened by Ms. Matejka's passing. Ms. Matejka was my mentor in high school and worked with me on my tennis my last two years of school. When I graduated in 1960,she became the tennis coach and told me that she would coach for only the four years it would take me to graduate from the Univesity of Arizona and that I could take over at that time. That's exactly what happened. She gave up the coaching position so that I could take oveer. Ms. Matejka was a truly remarkable person. A very important person in my life.

Ruby's smile and warmth inspired greatness. I saw her smiling and looking down at me when she went to be with Jesus - she has her keen wit and intellect restored. Once struggling with my salvation she directed me to 1 John - How great is the love the Father has lavished on us that we should be called children of God. She lived around the corner, my youth leader, my choir director, my calculus tutor, my friend. Thank you Jesus for Ruby.

I knew Miss Matejka as a student and also as sports editor of the school paper. I Interviewed her about her twin passions for math and tennis, and remember her talking about tennis' "mathematical precision."

She lived a good life.

I've thought of Miss Matejka many times through the years -- especially when I lock my car or front door. See, on a tennis team road trip to play Yuma High, I argued the Utopian (and preposterous) notion that people shouldn't lock up their possessions. She was a very trusting soul, but that went a bit too far for her. (Soon enough, I had to face reality and, like everyone else, carry a pocketful of keys.)
She made math easy for me, but never could teach me a tennis backhand anywhere near as powerful, graceful and accurate as hers. Not her fault.
It was quite unusual in the 1960s for a woman to coach any boys' sport, but we all grew to love her both as a mentor and a person. Boys being boys, however, we still resented that a "girl" could wipe the court with any of us. The wonderful thing is, she never embarrassed any of us by doing so.

Ruby was a wonderful person, she lead our choir at our church, as a teenager I was very in pressed by her leadership and her kindness. Have thought of her often. She was a good and Faithful servant to the Lord. You will be missed. Katie (Bray) Putney

My favorite teacher. Made learning math fun.

She was one of the nicest teachers at Pueblo. She was my Homeroom teacher and mentor; she also helped me with my tennis backhand.

I remember Ms Matejka as one of the best Math teachers I had at Pueblo High School, and an excellent Sunday School Teacher as well at Columbia Street Baptist Church. The world was a better place because she was here for a short while.

Ruby was my Mother's best friend. She was my music director at Columbia Street Baptist Church, my UISCM (Math) teacher at Pueblo High School, and my mentor. She was an inspiration to everyone that she came in contact with. We have celebrated many occasions together, cried over many others, but always had respect for one another. My heart is heavy for my loss, but heaven is celebrating her new dwelling place. May God give us peace in her victory.

Ruby was an incredible lady who was such an important part of my spiritual formation. During my high school and college years we kept in touch, sharing stories, food, laughter and hugs always. Ruby was a beacon of light for all the diverse lives she touched during hers. It was never about Ruby, it was always about ministering to others and living her faith. She was a deeply beloved friend, teacher, mentor, and colleague, and knowing that she now walks in eternal light brings a tear to my eye, but a smile in my heart. There is a glorious reunion ahead!
