Timothy COOKE Obituary

COOKE, Timothy Richard passed away after a long illness on February 25, 2018. A Memorial Service will be held at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 2, 2018. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. He was born on August 20, 1945 to Richard Platt Cooke and Ruth Bloxum Seder Cooke. Growing up in New York City, he attended Collegiate School. Drawn to the desert, he enrolled at the University of Arizona but was drafted after his sophomore year to serve in the US Army Infantry in the Mekong Delta during the Vietnam War. While on leave and staying with his family on Manhattan's East 71st Street, he first met Elizabeth Mary Cooke (née Larocca) at Malachy's on Lexington Ave and 73rd. After they married on August 24, 1969 they returned to Tucson so Tim could finish his geography degree on the GI bill. They returned to the northeast in 1976 where he began his long career at the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation and raised their family in Niskayuna, NY. After retirement, Tim and Liz purchased a home in Tucson's Catalina Foothills, eventually spending most of each year there. He is survived by Elizabeth; daughter, Jessica Klau and husband, Kenneth; son, Peter and wife, Amelia Cooke; son, Christopher Cooke; and grandchildren, Amelie and Eli Klau. His family remembers him for his love of nature and gardening. He chased lizards well into adulthood.

My wife, reading the local paper, asked, "Do you remember Timothy Cooke?"
"WHO?"
Then I remembered Tim. He, Barbara Haines and Pat Grady all arrived at our office when I was out on assignment. We became friends -- the best kind.
I also remember his wife, Liz.
My deepest condolences to her.
Now, I have a wife named "Liz." I would miss her terribly. This morning she and I shoveled out the driveway together.
Tim will remain in my heart forever.
Yes, I cried. And you will too, but, eventually the tears dry up and we pick up our tools and continue.

As a Collegiate senior, I remember Tim as a bright, affable guy and a bit shy. On the football field, however, he was an explosive force - and could outrun many of us. Thanks for your good works with the NYS Department of Conservation, Tim.

May,

i haven't seen Tim since we were together at Collegiate. He was a great guy. I wish I had known he was in the city working for the Dept. of Environmental Conservation. Would have been great to trade notes. Very interested that he decided to fight in Vietnam when so many of us, like myself, found a way to avoid it. My condolences for your loss. Regards, Dan Wise
