William Polson Obituary

Dr. William J. Polson (Bill), passed away on March 17, 2024, at the age of 86. Born in Tucson, Arizona on March 22, 1937, to Jack and Georgia Polson. He leaves behind a legacy of service, achievement, and love that will be cherished by all who knew him.

Bill dedicated himself to the field of dentistry for nearly four decades, leaving an indelible mark as a respected practitioner and leader. From 1965 to 2003, he served his community through his dental practice, embodying professionalism, and compassion in his work. His contributions extended beyond his practice as he held esteemed positions including President of the Arizona Dental Association, President of the State Board of Dental Examiners, and Chairman of the Arizona Dental Scientific Session. Bill's commitment to excellence earned him the honor being named State Dentist of the Year in 1978, a testament to his unwavering dedication to his profession.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Bill found joy and camaraderie on the golf course as a devoted member of the Tucson Country Club for over 60 years. Where he also served as President 1987-1988. His passion for sports extended to his involvement as a Founding member and Chairman of the Copper Bowl, as well as Co-Founding the UA Extra Point Booster Club. He also maintained strong ties with his alma mater, the University of Arizona, where he was an honorary Letterman and an active member and alumni advisor to the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.

Bill was an avid runner; he ran over 5 Marathons including Boston and New York. He gained lifelong friendships while he trained.

Some additional organizations Bill dedicated time to include the Tucson Conquistadors (lifetime member) and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (board member) and he co-founded the VIP Breakfast Club of Tucson.

Above all, Bill cherished his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Margaret, his devoted daughters Andrea Randall (Steven), Sally Ridenour (Cary), Tina Polson, and Jenny Schmidt (Scoob), as well as his adored grandchildren Katherine and Conner Randall, Maddie (Graham) Aston, Nick Cooper, and Sydney and Dylan Schmidt. He is also survived by his beloved sister Christine Stamatis and her husband Andy.

A celebration of Bill's life will be held on Friday, April 5th at 10:30am at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Tucson, located on the west side of Sabino Canyon Road between River and Kolb. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes or St. Alban's Episcopal Church in his honor.
