Darryl Calvert Obituary

Darryl Calvert

With great sadness and much love, the family of Darryl Eugene Calvert announces his passing on October 31, 2021 at Willard Walker Hospice in Fayetteville after a long fight with dementia. He was born in Tulsa, OK, on March 1, 1942, to Billy Edward Calvert and Betty Lou Burton. He spent most of his life in Tulsa, graduating from Will Rogers High School and the University of Tulsa. Darryl worked for IBM for 34 years, retiring in 1999 from a successful sales and marketing career.

Darryl was the consummate athlete: there were so many sports he participated in – baseball, football, wrestling, water skiing, roller skating, tennis, soccer, softball, sailing, snorkeling, ping pong, hunting, fishing, racquetball, snow skiing, bowling, golf, mountain biking, motorcycle riding, white water rafting – practically every sport available with the exception of lacrosse, hockey, and rugby. No wait, he tried rugby…once. He enjoyed them all and excelled at most.

Darryl with his tour guide, Mona, traveled the world – visiting almost all the states in the U.S. as well as many different countries – Mexico, Canada, Greece, New Zealand (his favorite), Australia, China, Germany, England, France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Spain, and more. He was also an avid reader enjoying Civil War and WWII histories, cold war suspense novels, and the writings of Twain, Hemingway and Steinbeck in particular.

Of the forty years they were together, Darryl and Mona lived the past twelve years in Fayetteville, AR on a farmette with horses, cows, dogs, cats and most importantly, grandchildren. Darryl is survived by his wife, Mona; his daughter, Kelly Stewart and her husband, Jack; his three grandchildren, Caroline, Jackson, and William; his uncle, Bill Burton; many Calvert cousins and other Williams/Miller/Burton family members; a host of friends from Fayetteville, Will Rogers, and IBM; plus his beloved dog, Daisy.

Per Darryl's wishes, his brain will be donated to Boston University's premier research program on the long-term consequences of repetitive brain trauma in athletes and military personnel. His cremation will take place at Westfield Chapel in Springdale, AR, followed by a private memorial service in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Springdale (AR) Animal Services (Daisy's first home); Boston University's CTE Research Center; or a charity of your choice.

I knew Darryl when both of us attended Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Darryl was a good student and athlete. While observing a football practice session, Darryl put a hit on one of his classmates that defied description. I can still see the block and hear the "popping of leather". Rest in peace my friend. Ride on Ropers!
