Eugene McGill Obituary

McGill, Eugene C. (Gene)

Sep 21, 1938 - Aug 26, 2024

Eugene C. (Gene) McGill was born on September 21, 1938, in Owasso, Oklahoma, and passed from this earth on August 26, 2024. He was the son of Horace (Kirk) and Sally Mae (Stout) McGill and was the oldest of five children.

Gene grew up in East Tulsa, where his father was employed at the Chandler Material Rock Quarry. He graduated from East Central High School in 1956 and was class valedictorian. He attended Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, on a football scholarship, earning a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Mathematics in 1960. His football team won a national championship in 1958.

After graduating from NSU, Gene taught chemistry at Edison High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for three years. He also worked as a research chemist at Jersey Production Research Company in Tulsa during part of that time. In 1963 he left teaching to work in the chemical engineering field where he spent the next 51 years until his retirement in 2014. Gene spent his career in Tulsa where he worked for John Zink Company; McGill Inc.; and IT McGill Pollution Control Systems, Inc. In 1992, he opened Gene McGill & Associates, Inc. in Skiatook, Oklahoma, and served as President and Senior Consultant.

Gene was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) for over 50 years. His expertise was in waste thermal treatment methods and systems for the disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and industrial waste. He installed and successfully tested over 500 incineration systems and more than 250 flare systems. His incineration experience included thermal and catalytic systems. He had extensive experience with low NOx burners, NOx removal processes, and high temperature thermal reduction of NOx, SO3 and Br2. He authored or co-authored 18 U.S. patents. Gene credits his business success to the outstanding personnel who supported his vision.

Gene was a long-time member and deacon at Immanuel Baptist Church in Skiatook. He enjoyed training and riding reining horses and competed in American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) and National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) events for many years. He also loved fly fishing and deer hunting.

Gene was preceded in death by his first wife, Maggie Lee (Saulsbury) McGill. They met in junior high school and were married for 62 years. He is survived by his second wife, Carolyn (Scivally) McGill, of the home; his daughter Gena McGill of Owasso, Oklahoma; his son Steven and wife Nancy McGill of Omaha, Nebraska; his daughter Sheila and husband Bruce Powers of Tulsa. He has four grandchildren, Brooks Powers, Steffanie Powers, Keegan McGill, and Ashlee McGill, and one great-granddaughter, Sky Maggileigh Powers.
