J. Gibson Obituary

J. Alan Gibson

Jun 2, 1937 - Oct 30, 2025

J. Alan Gibson was born on June 2, 1937, in Ponca City, OK, the oldest of three children. J. grew up attending First Christian Church in Tulsa with his family, beginning a lifelong service to God and this church. A formative moment in his life occurred when he was 11 years old. While attending a youth camp known as Camp Christian, he received Jesus Christ into his heart, which began a lifelong relationship with his Lord and Savior.

He attended Will Rogers High School and graduated from the University of Tulsa with a B.S. in Business Administration.

J. met the love of his life, Mary Lou Houser, at a young adult function at First Christian Church. They were married on December 10, 1960, the first couple to be wed in the church's new chapel. They were married for nearly 63 years before Mary Lou passed away in 2023.

J's life was one of service. J. served in the Marine Corps Reserves between the Korean and Vietnam Wars and was honorably discharged. He was in the furniture business for 56 years and retired three times! He also served his community by taking part in the Tulsa Christian Businessmen's Association. He served on the Camp Christian committee for over two decades, during which he led a capital campaign to build a new lodge. In appreciation of J. and Mary Lou's personal gifts and fundraising efforts, the Camp Christian Lodge was named in their honor. He also served as the treasurer for First Christian Church and was named an honorary elder in 2025. For over 60 years, J. was a devoted blood donor, giving the gift of life countless times through the Oklahoma Blood Institute.

J. experienced multiple miracles in his life, believing that God watches over us and has a plan for each of our lives. J believed strongly that a person's wealth is not determined by how much money someone has, but by the relationships of friends and loved ones. J. especially enjoyed sharing stories about his life, travels, and how the Lord had blessed him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Bonnie Gibson, his wife, Mary Lou, his brother Galen, and his nephew, Chris Gibson. He is survived by his sister Karma, his nieces and nephews, and many friends.

I am a phlebotomist at the Oklahoma Blood Institute. I had the honor of working with Jay many times over the years, and got to hear so many of his stories. I truly haven´t ever met anyone as dedicated as he was. He will be missed deeply by me and my team. My deepest condolences, -Sidney
