James Short Obituary

James M. Short

Jun 19, 1928 - May 24, 2025

Known to his friends as Jim, he was born in Okemah, OK June 19, 1928 and grew up in Sand Springs, OK. His parents were Jeffrey Brownlo Short and Florence Ann Short, nee' Stubblefield, of Scotland, AR. He graduated from Sand Springs High School in 1946 and from OSU in Stillwater, Okla., in 1950. He went on to graduate from Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery in Kirksville, Mo., in 1955. There, he met and married his wife of 65 years, Darlene Mae Short nee' Borron.

Jim was a physician for nearly sixty years. He was in private, family practice in Turley and Tulsa. He had a great love of and interest in north Tulsa, particularly Turley. He built his office on north Peoria and was active with the Turley Lions Club and the local bank among others. During that time, he was also Chief of Staff, and later, Associate Medical Director of Oklahoma Osteopathic Hospital. After closing his office in Tulsa in 2007, Jim worked for several more years in clinics around Oklahoma – primarily tribal clinics. He loved people and he loved his patients.

He is survived by his sons, Chris and Matt, and their wives, Jennifer and Lisa. He has a grandson, Kaden Short and a granddaughter, Hope Niles. He is also survived by his sister, Jeffrey Ann Gorusch of Clemson, S.C. Jim and Darlene were members of First Baptist Church of Tulsa and First Baptist Church of Winigan, Mo., for many years. Jim has been a movie lover and fan of OSU sports most of his life. He and Darlene also loved traveling in the US, Mexico, and Canada. Jim long had a passion for Western Americana; especially, Native American art and history. He has numerous friends in the art community.

Jim passed away peacefully on May 24, 2025 after a long life well-lived.

A memorial service will be held at All Souls Unitarian Church on June 11th at 4 p.m., 2952 South Peoria Avenue. The service will also be streamed live.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the OSU Foundation at https://secure.osugiving.com/s/giving/annual?dsgt=31-40250. Contributions will go toward scholarships at OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine at Cherokee Nation. Please note your donation is in memory of James Short. Matt and Chris, your dad visited my Pop regularly at Inverness when they both lived there. He was always positive and uplifting, and I always thought so highly of him and your mom. My condolences to you and your families. I loved coming to your house as a little kid, to play. Darlene and Jim were about the only adults I didn't fear.
I'll miss your dad not being.
He was a good egg.
All of the doc's of that era are about gone, now. My Pop passed June 16th, 2023.
Take care of yourselves until we meet again sometime. I'd really like that.

Dr Short was our family doctor from the 50s into the early 80s. He made housecalls and had a slice of apple pie and coffee more than once at our table. We loved him dearly. Jan Harper Figart and C.L.Harper Jr.

Dr. Short was my doctor from 1961 until he closed his office in 2007. My parents started taking me there right after I was born. I remember he once admonished me that he could not be my doctor for my entire life. I was not a fan of that statement. He knew me and my family so well. I credit him with my love of Cowboy and Indian art, after spending so much time looking at the art that adorned the walls of his offices. Godspeed, Dr. Short! I haven't found another doctor who lives up to the standard you set!

I well remember as a kid going to see Dr Short at his Turley clinic in the late 1950's. At 19 he removed my appendicitis and told me it was acute. I said yours is pretty cute too. It sounds like he lived a good long life as he helped others to do the same. RIP Dr. Short
