Shirley Rose (Sanders) Hunter, age 94, passed away in Tulsa, OK, on October 14, 2025. She was born on November 10, 1930, in Muskogee, OK, to Jesse Guy and Marga Sanders. They moved to Chouteau in 1937, where she graduated in 1949 as co-valedictorian. She attended college at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami, OK, where she received her Associate of Arts Degree. After graduation, she moved to Tulsa and was employed by Bethlehem Steel Company- Supply Division, where she was an executive secretary for 21 years. That is where she met her husband, David Lee Hunter. They were married in Miami, OK, on June 13, 1959.
They owned a cattle ranch where they raised and showed registered Polled Hereford cattle, both at the state and national level. Shirley served as secretary of the Oklahoma Polled Hereford Association's Women's group, the "Poll-ettes", as well as the Eastern OK Polled Hereford Association. After their retirement, Shirley and Dave spent a lot of their time traveling, including trips to Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Alaska, and the Caribbean, as well as many Polled Hereford events.
She was a charter member of Southwood Baptist Church, where she served as outreach leader for her Sunday School Class, and co-chairman of the church seniors, planning their trips for 10 years. She was active in the Tulsa County, Oklahoma Home and Community Education organization, serving several times as secretary and president of her local club. She was also named as county homemaker of the year.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Beverly, and husband, Dylan Boyd, of Tulsa; stepson, David L. Hunter, Jr., and wife, Jeri, of Tulsa. Also, grandson, Brian Hunter, and wife, Leslie, of Edmond, OK; and great-grandson, Wyatt Hunter, of Edmond; plus several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2008; her parents; and one sister, Daisy Lee Shawd.
Services will be held at Southwood Baptist Church, 4020 S.102 E. Ave., Tulsa, on Friday, October 17, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, under the direction of Moore Southlawn Funeral Home. A visitation will be held at Moore Southlawn Funeral Home on Thursday, October 16, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
